£4300 Electricity Bill!

erm last estimated reading: 80624
actual reading this time: 25049

is their calculation not the wrong way around...

To me it sounds like there is something dodgy going on.....

If you know anyone who knows anything about cabling, I'd try and get them to have a quick shifty around.

However, you've not said when the last official reading was taken by the elec company so it's a bit hard to know what is really going on!

Don't know anyone who knows any thing about cabling and I don't know when the last official meter reading was.

It wouldn't surprise me if something dodgy is going on. We had our washing machine replaced recently and the guy who came to do it was surprised with the way the waste water had been done, apparently it was joined with the waste pipe from the sink, which it shouldn't have been and was one size too small which cause blockages etc.

Also we had a fire in a restaurant which is next to the shop we live above, there was tons of smoke coming in to the flat but none of the alarms went off. Apparently the way they had been wired up meant that if the landing light wasn't on none of the smoke alarms would work cause it was getting its power from the lights power source!

Nope thats right, the meter has hit 99999 and wrapped back round to 25049, or at least that what they seem to think.

What does your tenancy agreement say about whose responsibility it is to pay the electric bill?

Don't know, haven't got it to hand, I would guess it says we are liable for bills. Thought that would be a pretty generic term on the agreement? Else why would anyone pay bills?

quoting myself but it's not just the wrong way round, it's just wrong

your owed usage = current reading - previous reading (which you say you've paid for)

so it's 25049 - 80624 = -55575

they owe you loads of money ;)

!!!!!!

:D:eek:

ah rubbish, no loophole, although is that going to be accurate? I've never had a meter that's gone over so I dont know

Nor have I, but it obviously must happen :)

Of course it doesn't mean they've used 45,000 units in the quarter, because it may have gone back to zero ages ago; nobody knows, because nobody was bothering to read the meter :D

That amount of electricity in such a short time is phenominal... surely that can't be correct?

And you are still paying rent?
How naive can you be. This should have been reported as the agency has to test every year. There license could be removed and criminal charges if they falsified the documents.

They may not have used £4300's worth in the quarter, but they've been on estimated bills for a long time. It could have been badly mis-estimated for years.

They fixed it pretty quick sharpish after we reported it to the fire brigade - even the actual landlord made an appearance.

They can only backdate a year supposedly, still, £4300 seems incrediably high even for a year?

yeah, it's going to be an absolute ball ache for anyone to work out what their actual usage has been, especially as they've been paying based on estimates so the total usage is actually considerably higher but they've already paid some
