Hi

I recently have got into the folding@home scene; this has forced me to rethink my cooling on my 8800GT as the stock low profile cooler though snazzy and quiet doesn't cut the mustard at 84c for long periods of time.
I would be interested to hear people’s experiences with aftermarket VGA cooling as I have heard it can be a bit risky, and if anyone has any preferences or tips that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time :)

Edit:- Been pootling around google and read a lot of VGA cooler comparisons and it seems that the AC Accelero S1 is about the best closely followed by the HR-03, anyone got these?

Got the S1 on my GT and it doesn't go over 55C under load according to riva tuner and that's with core at 745Mhz. GPU-Z reports 10C cooler for some reason.

The S1 has the best performance/price just make sure you attach a fan to it.

Did the S1 come with heatsinks for the voltage regulators? I have read that they are needed on the GT, or atleast the stock unit has thermal pads for them.

No it doesn't come with heatsinks for the VRMs, however Arctic Cooling officially stated that the VRMs on 8800GT do not need heatsinks.

I didn't put anything on the VRM just a 120mm right on top of it.

I use this method:

and even after heavy COD4 sessions, never gets above around 74C with around 60% fan speed. I thought of getting an aftermarket cooler, but hard to justify TBH...

Ah awesome thanks, I use riva to but I don’t notice much difference in temps on the higher fan speeds, the stock heat sink doesn't seem to move it fast enough.

One more question about the AC S1, I know it needs some fans and I would ideally like the gpu to be able to control them using its PWM header, so would it be possible for a 120mm to run off the card? I'm not sure if it would like the extra drain over a 50mm that its designed for.
