I'm after an inside look at the job... given my current job, it'd be a fairly logical progression for me at some point, and I'd like to know what any current PCSO's think of it.

Many thanks

you dont even get paid for being a PCSO do you or is that a specialist constable, cant remember......but its deffo one or other

Thats a special that doesn't get paid... my first aid instructor used to be one. His insight was really fascinating, but I dont wanna be a special.

The ones I've seen round here get quite a bit of respect and are valued a great deal by the older generation... but thats an outsiders point of view, the local pcso's may feel differently... I intend to collar one next time I see them, but in the mean time, I thought I'd ask on here...

It's best to either be a Special and get experience to become a Police Officer or just apply to become a Police Officer from the off. I wouldn't bother with PCSO, they have to pretty much ask criminals to wait around for the proper Police to come along and arrest them.

Yeah, CSOs are pretty much powerless, and I doubt if there's a Chav that doesn't know that these days, at least around here, that is. Can't speak for anywhere else.

Here in Devon it starts off just above 16k, increasing to around 17/18k + bonuses - one of my friends has been suspended over something minor for coming up to six months on full pay, he's been itching to get back to work but the hearing has kept being put off, he even got his bonus

i applied for pcso on march 20th passed application then had assesment on 27th april passed that. I thought after this i might start pretty soon but i was wrong :(. I had medical june 11th passed that and recently phoned recruitment who told me that after further background checks and references are ok i might start in aug or sep.

I see this job as good pay 17k (from poor background and currently on 12k) and see it as a good stepping stone to move on to police which i may plan on doing. I just wish it didnt take so long to start I still really dont know if i have it even though ive passed the important things i suppose

PCSO's certainly get respect from me. People wanting to make a positive difference to their community, can't see whats not to respect to be honest.

My mate was the same. He was only in the Plastic Police for 9 months before he got accepted into the proper police :)

Different areas view PCSO's differently.

The ones near me are respected and even have the majority of "chavs" on their side. They take the time to talk to them and find out why they hang about the town all the time. The majority of day time incidents in our town centres are down because of their presence.

However, they are in the best part powerless and unable to arrest people, unless a real police officer isn't present, then they do have the power to arrest someone (citizens arrest) until a real officer arrives to take over.

I think the respect they command depends both on the area and the individual, like some full coppers not all of them deserve the respect their uniform suggests
