The Mass Effect (PC) Discussion Thread

Right haven't read the thread as i don't want to read spoilers.

And I know this s probbably going to be hard to answer (without spoilers) but is mass effect actually any good? Is the plot good or crap etc.

Really fancy a good rpg lately

much appreciated :)

yep its good, plot is good. Main let down is the random planet side quests are a little dull and repetitive. However the main quests and main planet side quests are excellent.

I installed it yesterday after work, only played for a few hours (Got to the citadel.) But I'm having trouble with sounds during some cut-scenes. Its like the sound effects dont work, but the voices do.

I'm using a x-fi music card. My drivers are upto date as far as I know. Anyone else got this problem?

Yep get exact same problem..... guess which sound card i have :D

Creative Xi-fi

its not too bad as its uncommon and it appears mostly in dialogues. Not sure what the fix is.

Also what selection of NPCS are people adventuring with? i picked the turian and Rex so far. But if im after entertaining dialogue between members who'se do you recommend?

Here's a fix which worked for me go to C:/mydocs/Bioware/mass effect/config open the bioengine.ini and look for the line [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice] change the values MaxChannels and TotalAvailableChannels to 64.

Since I did this I've had no missing dialogue or other musical effects in the game.

Has anyone noticed that the sound is really really low in this game? I sometimes have to jack the volume up just to hear what people are saying.
Can that be remedied with the above fix or is that something completely different?

I have the X-Fi card too.

So how long did it take everyone to finish the game, then? I've clocked in at 17 hours, 41 minutes, which seems incredibly short. I did virtually every sidequest I discovered, and thought I'd gone to all the different systems and landed on every possible planet. It seems that I've missed a fair bit of it. Level 45, too - what's the level cap? I missed half of the content out of the KOTOR games the first time I played them too, it seems to be a pattern with me and RPGs.

Debating whether to play it through again...might do it as a renegade, as opposed to playing it as a bit inbetween this time round. I'd rather do it with a new character though, maybe a biotic, but I don't know if I can stomach the loss of my massive armour and powerful guns. :p

How are people getting the xbox controller to work? I would have thought it would auto detect everything. Or do I have to manually change the controls?

I wouldn't use the 360 pad with the PC version, it'll just be awkward. Especially since BioWare did a good job of porting the gameplay to make full use of mouse/keyboard combo.

First play through took me 7 hours. I think i missed a bit :p

Yeh, just tried it. Thinking about it, using the keyboard would be a lot quicker anyway with hotkeys and everything.

I just can't get into it because of third person setup. I find it difficult to get used to running around looking at the back of someone's head. Not only it wrecks the shooter part for me, because shooting in third person view has nothing to do with precision and accuracy and everything to do with ability to adapt to the console like field of view of fly in the corner of the ceiling, but turning and panning with back of my character stuck in the middle, makes me dizzy after a while. Third person view isn't done properly ever since Heretic II. And it's a great pity. Mass Effect would be amazing as a first person game. Just like Assassin's Creed would me much better off as FPS...

I normally like first person view more but i do like this one apart from my squad loves the lifts so much they don't want to come out half the time :p.

Any hints for combat I keep getting raped, just got to my first planet & struggling. I have done quite a few side quests before getting here but have hardly any cash to buy weapons/armour.

all the upgrades and collectibles are very confusing i don't know what to do with everything what is convert to omni gel for gods sake lol

think you need omnigel for hacking/decryption attempts. Combat is a little tricky but has been a little easy so far. Easy enough just to camp and the enemy comes towards you.

Would prefer another way to restock grenades rather than just finding them on bodies though.
