Toyota Aygo.

Whats your position on the used washing machine/dishwasher market?

I dont have a position as it's not an area I'm interested in and tbh, a new washing machine is 300 quid isnt it? Its hardly expensive.

It's not like spending 7 grand then fussing over the road tax.

I just cant get it :(

If you needed a new TV, would you scour the evening herald for one or go to Marsh mills and pay a visit to currys? You're almost guaranteed to save money by going to the herald, or a for sale forum on the net, or go to cash converters, but I'm guessing, like most of us, you'd head for the shop.

I've also failed in my mission to prevent the GF's parents buying a brand new Fiesta 1.4 TDCi to do 7k a year in. And to think they've commented that MY car is 'unneccesary, pointless and financially reckless'

Sometimes people make decisions that we disagree with, my parents bought a Hyundai Terracan to replace their Range Rover about 3 years ago, can't fathom the idea myself, but hey, it was their decision and their money. They don't understand why I wanted the audi with the performance I can't use legally, it's a case of each to their own.

Some people also have a distinct disconnect between purchase costs and running costs when it comes to buying cars, mainly because purchase costs are buy and forget, but running costs are forever. You can put the money away if you save money on the purchase costs to cover higher running costs, but most people don't budget that way.

Almost certainly. But the difference is that £450 for a TV is not a huge amount of money whereas £7k for a car is - the values are different.

Now, I appreciate that for some people £7k is as insignificant as £450 for a TV is to me. But for people for whom this is the case, threads on overclockers about what car to buy dont tend to feature on their to-do list so I think its safe to assume in most cases when somebody asks us to spec them a 6-7k car, 6-7k is a lot of money.

But, yes, you are right for normal people - but I doesnt mean it cant confuse the heck out of me. My girlfriends parents priority when buying a car is 'high mpg' and 'in the £35 road tax bracket'.

On an £11,000 supermini. I can't rationalise it however many times it gets explained to me :( They will be paying cash for said Supermini as well, so it's not exactly a monthly budget thing.

Its expensive when a used washing machine is like £5, i think thats what i paid for my high end bosch (which would have been £500 new or so).

Same applies to cars, anything infact. I just do not understand new purchases unless an item is not available used, or there is no saving by going used.

Also the fact you dont pay £700 tax a year.

Only £120 (or whatever it is). And that doesn't matter what TV you have. You could have a 15" B&W portable or a 50" plasma.

Can you really get sub 3-4 year old Bosche washing machines for a fiver?

Prices vary but the savings are massive on used white goods and things like this

I'm the same as you but even more extreme on the not understanding scale, i dont understand ANY new purchases unless a second hand purchase doesnt make financial sense or is not possible.

And less, you can even get things like that for nothing if you know where to look.

Even if you don't luck out like that, £50-£60 would be about the normal second hand price, even if it's only a year old.

One of the bands for next years road tax. Obviously you don't pay that for an Aygo.

Aere you thinking 2010 tax pricing?

In 2009 the highest tax band will be £440.

In 2010 this becomes £455 but with a first years tax (Showroom tax) of £950.

But considering the op is looking at an aygo why compare it to something that would be in the highest (or one down from the highest) tax band?!

As for the op why don't you look at some of the alternatives that would pop up if you look nearly new. Something like a Fiesta TDCI or citroen C2 HDI? Both would offer better fuel economy, cheaper tax and would probably be a nicer place to be when on the road.

You don't buy the most beautiful washing machine, you buy the most efficient purchase.

SMEG seem to be doing alright, along with any number of those companies that sell those high end kitchen integrated kitchen appliances. Clearly, you've never owned a house/flat of your own, or have had to furnish a place of your own.

It's the priorities thing. There will be people wondering why on earth would you buy £7000 worth of six pot Leicester Favourite with intergallactic mileage and six tax discs in side pockets when you can have brand new Fiesta Diesel (or Hyundai Accident) for that. Since their lifestyle doesn't involve bets on races between the lights, long distance rep visits or pulling "fo shizzle" nods at drive through takeaways, the priority to own something that handles, looks the part and goes to 60 faster than one can draw sunglasses from the cubby is no longer in play. Instead the priorities move towards £30 servicing, "Brian from Bingo has one" conversation starters and undesirability of the built in stereo to local teenagers.

Picking new Fiesta over used 5 series should be though of as "would I rather get new ASDA's George jeans or preowned Diesels from ebay if nobody is going to be checking labels below my size 46 waist" i-do-not-care'ism rather than the kind of uninformed, false economy choice that makes people pay over odds for new Bush LCD rather than preowned or ex display Panasonic plasma.

Toyota Aygo is slightly different though. Buying Toyota Aygo is a bit like fake Prada bag. It's not really a Toyota, it's not really a car, sure as hell not worth the money on that label dealer put behind the windscreen. Everyone knows it's not a Toyota. Everyone knows it's not a car. But you can still pretend to each other at family get togethers - "CMOS can drive you to the mass gramma" (turns around to the rest of the crowd) "in his Tow-yow-ta". Sounds better than "his Perodua Mellissa". Just. ;)
