Far far away....
Last Friday me and Mrs Slinwagh walked to our local shop with our 4 year old little girl.

On the way there the path has been dug up where United Utilities have been carrying out some work.

Acrossthe path were two plastic plates, roughly 1m square. To get to the shop there was no option but to walk over the plates and the surrounding area was fenced off.

As we walk across our little girl tripped and fell over a crack / hole that had formed in the very centre of the plate, because the yellow plate was dirty and muddy it wasn't obvious that there was any damage let alone a trip hazard. She was hurt or injured other than a couple of scuffed knees.

On looking at the plate closely you could see the damage, again because of the dirt and the way the crack had formed it was hard to see.

I decided to take some photographs, these are time and date stamped.

When I got in I phoned UU, i explain what had gone happened and suggested the plate needed replacing, after being passed from pillar to post, including the legal team as they thought I was trying to sue!

After 20 minutes or so I speak to a chap who said that the sub contractor Morgan Est would replace the plate that very night.

Saturday arrives and I pop to the same shop and surprise surprise the plate has not being replaced, I get home, phone UU and go through the story again but this time add in that the plate has not been replaced as promised. I get transferred to the same guy as the day before who apologises and says that he will get back in touch with Morgan Est and the plate will be replaced that day. We have a conversation about how bad it would be now if someone injures themselves in light of UU knowing there is a safety issue.

So Friday and Saturday the plate has not been replaced.

Sunday comes and I go to check the plate has been replaced, you guessed it wasn't! Somehow I managed to speak to the same guy again who assures me that the work has been carried out, I assure him it hasn't and that I have photos to prove it, he then promises that Morgan Est will replace it that very day.

Monday and for the sheer hell of it I go and check to see if it has been replaced, it has, the only issue now is that on the new plate that has been put down is a spray painted message asking how I am, cue another complaint!

Today comes and I receive a phone call from UU, I ask about whether a message sprayed on the plate is acceptable, we agree it is not, I also get the lady to clarify what has happened and what their records say. Morgan Est were adamant that the plate was changed on the Friday, only now have I been asked to submit the photos!

So now the UU project manager has called in the Morgan Est manager, the two separate gangs that say they replaced the plate and I am to expect a formal apology from both UU and Morgan Est when the investigation is complete.

Complaining at its best. That's brilliant. Well done. You should go and spray a big dobber on it with '=YOU' next to for the guy that has to pick it up.

Well played sir. :)

Can't believe they sprayed that message; how juvenile.

I used to be the Compliance Manager for a plant and tool hire company providing equipment to UU.

The number of times I had to phone up our depots and bully them into getting a job done (whether putting down a plate, moving temporary traffic control signals, etc.) was simply beyond belief.

In this case, I'd be pointing the finger at Morgan Est rather than UU (though it's still UU's responsibility to ensure that the job gets sorted).

Wow it's like David and Goliath, only this time David won! :p

Good for you Slinwagh:)

Don't get me wrong I know accidents happen as my little girl proved that but too not sort the hazard out after it has been pointed out is wrong, even more so when you have been told it has been completed!

Fully agree here, it's not the principle of the thing being wrong in the first place, they had a chance to replace it then neglected to repeatedly whilst lying about it! Can we see a copy of the final apology too when they send it? :)

You can, I have no problem with naming and shaming!

FWIW, it is unlikely that UU were aware that the plate had not been replaced. Morgan Est would have told them that it was replaced, and they would have passed the message on. These jobs are always conducted at arm's length, and UU cannot confirm every detail at every point.

Morgan Est would have contacted one of their work crews and told them to take out a plate. This was obviously not done, and it seems equally clear that nobody from Morgan Est bothered to check that it had been done.

Yet they would have said to UU "Yeah it's done", or "Yeah, doing it now" just to keep them happy. It's how these companies work; there's a lot of slacking about and dodging of responsibility, particularly over the weekends.

And of course, UU would have relayed the message back, trusting that Morgan Est was telling the truth (which they obviously weren't).

I suffered nearly 18 months of this malarky when I worked for A-Plant on the UU, WWU, SG & NG contracts.* All the subcontractors are at it. The contractors themselves are far less likely to drop the ball, since they are liable for significant council fines if there's any mess-up on site.

Yeah, sorry, I meant the subcontractor lying. UU is just a person in an office, they'll have no idea what had or hadn't happened :p

LOL, and don't I know it! The amount of abuse I used to get on my end of the phone when trying to negotiate with UU's engineers and the managers at A-Plant's depots... all because our depots would say they'd done things which they hadn't actually done. :( :p
