Passed motorbike test

I've got piccies :D Sweet lord she can shift when she wants to! I've been on the back of a Bandit 600 and CBR400 and they were quick, but it's a whole different level of quick when you're riding solo it seems! It gets to around 8000rpm and just goes berserk!

I'll give her a good polish at the weekend and give her a good once over.

One thing for anyone who's had this bike (Flukester) - Does the temp gauge actually change at any point? I took it easy while she was warming up, but even after 10minutes it was in the same spot. I'm thinking it's either broken or it simply doesn't get warm enough to register on the gauge unless you go flat out for a while.

Thats well smart, my mate has had 2 and relly looked after them but that looks better than them both! The temp guage on my RF never really goes up unless its a hot day and I've been on a run and then end up in traffic, so probably the same.

Scort: Regarding planning, finances etc hah! I can't believe how much i've spent getting this particular 'hobby' off the ground! Excluding learning and the bike! Last 2 weeks, God knows how much i've spent on bits and bobs. Trouble is, when buying bits and bobs, at least one bit or one bob ends up costing 50-60 quid! Tank bag, race visor... Still need paddock stand and rabid dog to chain to bike.
AND i'm going Europe on her, and keep finding things I need, breakdown cover, travel insurance, MORE BUNGEES, a flipping hotel in Luxemburg!

Tis and expensive, yet enjoyable hobby though :)

At rough estimate, my spend back in August last year went:

Bike - £4,995
Insurance - £915
Road tax - £66 :D
One piece leathers - £500
Summer gloves - £90
Bike chain and lock - £80
Ground ancor - £30

Prior to that it was:

Helmet, jacket and gloves - £250 (a deal after chatting up the woman at the bike shop)
Trousers and boots - £260
Theory test and DVD - errr, £20-30
DAS course - £590
Day training and re-test - £250

First month's fuel bill was probably almost couple of hundred, but I couldn't stop riding  I also spent £260 on a new Arai a few months back, £400 on two piece leathers (flogged the one piece) even more for a dark visor, finally got around to picking up a disc lock, I fitted a Scottoiler too - chirst there's just been so much

Ah well, money well spent methinks!

Scort.

I recall sitting at some lights second day with the SV, hot as a mother goose day, temp gauge going up up up, reached 105 and finally (as i'd been told to expect anyway) the fan came on, and it did go down! Normally mid 80's.

I need to polish and wax mine, I might try and do it tomorrow if I can escape work even earlier.

EDIT: hehe yeah, cringing going through that and mine is basically the same! Need to stop now, my cushty out of town project has ended so no more free living :/ BUT i'm now back at home so can ride ride ride!

Looks very very nice Simmy, a belter of a first bike too, none of that 125 nonsense :D

Scort.

yeah looks abs fantastic, your gonna have so much fun.. yours is much later than mine with ram air induction.

About the temp thing I can't remember was so long ago.. it should rise though in traffic and when it gets close up the top the rad fans kick in. You'll deffo hear them as they are quite loud on ZZRs and will blast your legs with hot air :)

One thing I remember is if you fail to start it on a few attempts it floods real easy and will never start, so just walk away for 20mins and it'll be fine then.. I got abit heavy handed on starter and smoke poured out from under saddle. Fried some wiring...

oh here is some specs I found on net..

2006 Kawasaki ZZR600
Wet weight: 431 lbs
HP: 89.7
Torque:42.7lb/ft
1/4 mile: 11.19 sec
0-60mph: 3.42 sec

Speed.....Time
(MPH).....(Sec)
10...........0.54
20...........1.02
30...........1.50
40...........2.00
50...........2.52
60...........3.41
70...........4.25
80...........5.31
90...........6.53
100.........8.05
110.........9.76
120.........11.94
130.........15.03
140.........19.77
150.........28.31

thats a 2006 model but I'm sure they didn't change the engine too much...but the standing 1/4 is really good, especially when you consider a veyron only just beats it by 0.4secs at 10.8 :D

edit: seems to be a good zzr forum here http://www.zzr-international.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=13

Agreed! Great looking bike - some classic shapes just don't age. :)

She's a heavy beast though!! Surprised she's sub 100bhp though!

Enjoy it! :D

I never think about the cost of leathers/equipment I just buy it and enjoy myself! :D

It's one of those engines that while sub 100bhp has a crap load of mid-range for an inline 4. It doesn't make all the power at the top of the rev range like full on sports 600's. For anything but the track this is a far better bike in terms of power and delivery. It's not exactly slow either!

I've spent around £2k so far and I think that's a bargain considering how much fun it is :D

Helmet - £40
Leather Jacket - £30
Boots - £40
Gloves - £20
Theory Test - £40
Direct Access Course - £495
Bike - £1500
Insurance - £260
Road Tax - £48
TOTAL - £2473

Considering the license is a one off cost and I can potentially sell the bike and get £1500 back, it's not too bad! I haven't been on holiday for nearly 4 years, plus I don't smoke and I don't drink a lot. This is my present from me to me :D

Reading other sites and magazines, it says the ZZR-600 is 97bhp. I'll see what the haynes manual says.

Oh no purely looking at the torque figures and the performance figures its obviously not slow, just surprised as having ridden one they felt rather rapid! Then again most 600s are now days pretty much similar in terms of 0-60, 0-100 times and this one still holds it's own which is great!

Only £40 on a helmet? Is that even possible?!

Like Fluester I can't remember the temp gauge on my ZZR. I don't recall it not moving or doing anything strange though.
Enjoy it. ZZRs are fine bikes and mine served me well for many years.

Hey guys, as im only 19 (20 in a few months) i can't decide weather to get a bike now or in a few years, although i really want one now as i like them. I know that i have to do my CBT and then category A test, this allows me to ride up to 33bhp bikes with no L plates (ride on motorway too) then after two years any bike, OR when i hit 21 do a a course to allow me to ride anybike. However, what are 33bhp bikes like? How slow are they? What are they like for example on a three hour ride? High insurance? Am i looking at getting a 250/400?

The bigger the bike, the nicer they are to ride with 33bhp because it's a bhp limit, not a torque limit.
Get a mid-sized twin like an SV650 and it will still have enough stomp to out-drag most cars.

Im looking more for a bike that would be comfy for long periods of riding, e.g up to three hours. Obviously i want the speed to overtake, but im not going to be doing 140mph for ***** and giggles. Do most insurance companys recudce the cost if it has 33bhp kit on? Do most bikes vary on how they react with a 33bhp kit on them?

What a complete n00b I am. Riding into Sainsbury's car park, full right lock, dab of the front brake at 3mph for some reason and over she went :( Luckily there was absolutely no damage, but my ego is a bit bruised. I managed to damper the fall in a feeble attempt to stop it going over, but not a chance :p

30 for the jacket? Damn shrewd buying that man! Can you/we get to 60 without changing? I've yet to try.

Busters accessories were having a stonking sale, which is how I got my jacket (Reduced from £100) and helmet (reduced from £70 I think).

Yes, all bikes are different.
It's not that insurance companies will reduce the premium, they will insist on it as it's a requirement of your restricted license. Insurance is usually the same 33bhp or full power (once you are allowed to ride full power).

Bad luck man.. best thing I can advise is don't do very low speed full lock, the stability on a heavy bike is horrible and by just dabbing front brake I suspect bike just got itself out of shape and you lost balance.

If you need to turn in tight spot, at least till you more used to it just walk it with your feet keeping them on the deck (use engine to help you if you need it), and do a 3 point turn if needed, use less lock...may be slower but much safer

Even after 20 years of riding I hate slow speed full lock feet up, bike is just waiting to fall over, so usually keep feet down until I straighten up abit :(

Good thing is you'll prolly never do it again, and great that no dmg. :)

Yep, that's what I'll be doing from now on :) I knew it wouldn't be long before I made a mistake! It's so much heavier and more responsive on the throttle than the GS500s I learnt on, it takes quite a bit of getting used to in slow corners.
