Hi folks,

Hopefully next week I will be purchasing the following parts for a build:

Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£79.89)
BFG GeForce GTX 280 OC 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (£434.74)
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB) (£64.61)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail (£211.49)
Pioneer DVR-215DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (£17.61)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775) (£17.61)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3500320AS) (£49.34)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (66I-01939) (£69.31)
Coolermaster Real Power 700w Modular Power Supply (£84.59)
Lian-Li PC-7B PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black (£58.74)
Compro VideoMate Vista T500F DVB-T Hybrid Internal PCI TV Tuner - Retail (£44.64)
Sub Total : £963.89
Total : £1,145.44

Firstly, can anyone see any faults or problems with the system, one of the concerns is has the case got enough cooling? most pictures on the web show the side panel having a fan but you cannot tell on the ocuk page? and secondly am I really stupid going for a 280 card rather then a 4875 or 4875xf solution?

The rig will be for gaming and Lans. Currently I am planning to play Age of Conan and then WAR with it at acceptable speeds at 1680 x 1050 and also a bit of TF2 and want to see what crysis looks like as my current PC plays it slower then a PowerPoint slide show.

Please don't respond with ROFL 280 LOL SUX ATI ROXORS MY BOXOR, I am open to all suggestions as its a hefty purchase but i am looking for a 3yr system and not a bang for the buck now and upgrade in 1 or 2.

Cheers
Paul

Looks solid enough but I'm not sure I would spend so much money on GTX280 at the moment. While 4870 doesn't beat it, it gives it a good run for the money so I wouldn't really put past Nvidia to lower their prices sharpish.

as mentioned maybe hold off on the gfx card until they've been available, along with the 4870, and decent stocks are in then the price might drop a bit.

also hold off on the processor if you can as i've read about intel price changes due in the next month or so.

hard disk wise have a look at the samsung f1 640gb.

Replacing your hard drive with a Samsung spinpoint F1 is probably a good idea- faster, quieter, cooler and cheaper.

Personally i wouldn't go for the GTX 280 until the 55nm version, which should be cheaper and faster. I would go for a 4850 now leaving you with £300 that you can put towards a new card whenever the 4850 starts to struggle. If you did you the ATI route, maybe think about going for the pro version of your Mobo, which would give you the option of going crossfire for an extra £7.

many thanks for the replys folks, ive changed the HDD for a F1 but does it matter if its 8mb or 16mb cache?

change mobo to x48 and get 2 x 4870.. that will set you up for ages and porbably out perfromce the GTX 280. and lets face it. crossfire looks good at a lan party :D

do that^

really... just do it:)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775) (£17.61) -- swap this for aUltra 120 extreme :)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3500320AS) (£49.34) - Get a Samsung F1 instead.

Everything else seems fine :)
