I need something new in my life and really fancy a road legal quad...Id have to sell my rx7 to fund it (that was the deal with the misses) but that hardly gets used so that's fine....Now i know bugger all about quads, ive been looking at the raptors as they look the dogs but thats the only reason why...anyone got one or can you recommend something different?
What are quads like on the road?..kinda get the impression they may roll quite easily! is this the case?..whats insurance like?..

cheers

gavin...

Quad + Road = FAIL

Also, sell an RX7 to buy a QUADBIKE? Do you wear a long sleeved white coat when you go to sleep in your rubber wallpapered room?

One of my work mates brought a 660cc road legal quad a few weeks ago. Hes come off it twice, second time being a few days ago.

Broke his ankle, skin off both arms, side of his chest and his legs.

Wasnt even driving like a fool. They have a tendancy to flip, slide, roll. :D

Well yeah i did but got out a few months back ;)....I just need a change, cars are getting boring for me now..fancy something different thats all..

Had 125's for years..Never got around to doing my test though..A quad i can just hop on and ride on my car licence, besides bikes are common i want something that will maim me really quickly ..:)

There what?

Obscenely dangerous. Narrow wheelbase & high COG is a bad combination.

Can't filter or go round corners like a bike, can't keep you dry or carry anything else like a car. Worst of both worlds.

baiscally everything he said, the only times quads are fun are off road/round a farm or off track, wouldnt dream of using them on the road, have you ever tried to turn sharply on one Im pretty sure you could actually do a barrell roll

the only benefit is that you could potentially travel as the crow flys, but then you may as well get a crosser (less dangerous and faster).

Usually see quite a few quads out when we have out bike night out every Wednesdays(loads of bikers out, not just a group of my mates). The quads are all ridden by complete and utter tools. Seen a few accidents on them when they've been out, but they were riding like **** holes.

As said previously, they are the worst combination of both Bike and Car. I'd say just get a full bike licence with the money you've made, and get yourself a decent bike, much more fun, and MUCH more practical.

I went through this exact phase, with the exact sentiments. No bike licence. Quads are different. Hence cool.

Then I drove one (and it was just a 250cc one) and I flipped it. Came off, winded myself (but that was it). And I wasn't even going that quickly.

Dude. they are dangerous. I would love to have one, but I'd have it for use on a private field where the aim of the game would be to tear things up a bit before chilling out with a beer. Not as a mode of transport. They are insane.

I got into the biking game - much more practical, and I firmly believe them to be substantially safer

Had one and they are brilliant (tuned Ram 250E 75mph+ :p), only as dangerous as you drive them! However I have been riding dirt bikes/quads for coming up to 10 years.

As said really good fun. With all that said, once the novelty has worn off, they are much more fun offroad/on tracks.

Don't let all these people put you off, when getting a road legal quad, several accessories are essential; these being,

"nerf bars" - prevent yourfoot/ankle going under the tyres, if you slip off the foot pegs.

widened rear/front axles with 2-5inch spacers (each side), these lower the centre of mavity a lot, and make corning easier and safer.

However the general rule of the thimb is that you try a 250cc first before you move to a 500cc+, as that is what all the above posts are refering too.

Idiots + big engine = crash... simple as

Hope this helps

All of these quads are fitted with either a Yamaha R1/R6 engine :) 120MPH+

http://www.superquads.biz/gallery.html - shows the differene that spacers make - a lot wider than your standard quad

And these things are optional?

2" to 5" or 2.5"? Wheel bearing killers surely?
The COG stays the same, you just need more tipping force to lift the wheels.

Well.... On high performance models they are usaully standard.

Wasn't 100% on the COG thing - Cheers

And they aren't bearing killers, although google will explain all :)
