Learning Lurker...

Don't force anything. Nothing in a PC build requires any force. Nice and easy, slowly and efficiently.

Also, not too much thermal paste on the CPU. a small pea sized dab right in the centre will do just fine. The heatsink will then spread it out for you when you apply it.

Well I've now gone and done it!! No turning back now. Order has gone in...looking forward to 'getting in the swim'...one thing is for sure...I have a lot to learn...

Not sure if new PSUs still have it (I haven't seen it) but I remember building a PC for my mate and the voltage was set to 115W or something similar. Heard a zip noise followed by silence after powering up, looked at the voltage and thought that I just fried £1000 worth of components. God bless fuses :p

Pretty much what I was going to say. With the possible exception of locking the CPU in position, if you're having to press too hard, you're doing something wrong.

Take your time.

Be careful with screwdrivers and other sharp implements. One slip and your mobo / fingers can be damaged!

Watch out for any sharp edges on your case, particularly when detaching the blanking plates on the front / back. I've had nasty cuts from cheap cases.

Installing the CPU and the cooler outside of the case is a good tip. Make sure you plug in the 4-pin or 8-pin power connector near the CPU. Do it before you screw the mobo into the case, as it can be hard to get to if you have a large heatsink.

Dropping screws in your case is bad. Don't be tempted to leave one rattling around if you can't get it out.
