Hugh loses chicken fight

Anyone who thinks these mass produced chickens who literally live in their own excrement taste better than organic or free range chicken should be locked up in the battery shed instead.

Blind taste tests say otherwise. I myself cannot tell much difference either way. Does this mean I should be locked up in a battery shed? What an odd thing to say...

I'll be perfectly honest in that I'm not amazingly concerned about the welfare of animals I eat, although I've started to question it a lot more recently

I chose price over the animal welfare especially given the current price increases but will chose the chicken that has been better looked after if the price isn't too much higher. Unfortunately supermarkets know their onions and slap on a massive price hike for the so called organic and free range stuff.

Yeh, im not a fan of all them "frozen chicken/turkey/pork/carcass nuggets" and stuff like that aimed at kids, maybe some sort of approach at stuff like that would be worthwhile too...

Its a fine balance all of this. Its so hard even to get people to have meals together with other issues people have in life... the attitude of its so easy to whack something in the microwave or buy something quick on the way home fits in with a lot of peoples lives.

I love making all my meals and im pretty confident i eat well. I havent had chicken for time now because everytime i go shopping i cant really afford it (dodgy student budgets)

I cannot tell the difference between free-range or battery hens at all either.

What does it matter if you can't tell the difference between them? You know how they've lived their lives and that should be enough. "Sewer rat might taste like sweet pumpkin pie but I wouldn't know because I wouldn't eat the filthy so-and-so". Would you eat sewer rat if it tasted nice?

Can you not pitch in with house/hall mates and buy a decent chicken, cook it up for a roast on Sunday then use the rest for stew?

Shame...

I can definatly tell the diffence between tesco value and free range, theres something wrong with you if you cant

I'd be surprised if many people could, certainly as far as eggs go. The meat should be easy enough raw and if cooked very well you might be able to taste a difference, but its not as big as people like to make out. The argument should be not about the taste, but for animal welfare. Beef's probably a better example, you'll get better marbleing of fat and superior flavour with that reared on a controlled diet rather than the grass fed/live free type. But anyway...

The guy's a complete arrogant ****!!

I come from Axminster and my parents still live there so I'm there quite a bit. He's extremely arrogant and up his own backside, has come to a small town and the general population there hate him. He's always down at the local Tesco trying to hand out leaflets and causing a nuisance before going back to his city house.

He's a city man and does NOT drive his crappy old landrover everwhere!! His onscreen personality is of a caring, country man but he's the complete opposite! Hes a fake!

Ah, Axminster, the place where he did the chicken show? My lasting memory was the bloke in the pub, who looked rather well oiled and was complaining how it was only a "******** ******* chicken, who care's where it comes from, anyway i can't afford a £15 (or whatever silly amount it was) chicken with a wife and 2 kids". I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who've just sunk a number of pints and who are then complaining about a lack of cash, especially when the price difference wouldn't even have been as much as 1 pint.

I'm not sure i can agree with him not being a "caring, country man" when the man clearly does care, otherwise he wouldn't be fighting these causes. Yes, he might have a financial motive but still, he does know his stuff and he brings some important issues to the public eye.

Our usual shopping bill is £25-30 per week. After watching all the chicken related programs we tried buying organic/free range foods (not just chicken) but our bill shot up to £40-50 a week.

As much as I do appreciate that the animals have a crap life up until they end up on my plate I simply cannot afford to do it any other way. Hugh's attitude towards people like myself is simply appalling and for this reason I severely dislike the man.

Thats the point i was trying to make. He didnt have much to say to people that couldnt afford it.... all he said was its an extra couple of £... more or less tough

it all adds up and adds up too much for some people.

I agree his attitude was a bit crap in regards to that

I personally cannot STAND how chickens are farmed, i think it's an absolute disgrace that they can pack in that many chickens into one small little hut.

have you SEEN how they can't even walk because they are so fat? HAVE you seen the state of there legs while they walk about in crap ALL day/night?

I can see that people might not be able to afford free range but its not that more expensive, no one is saying you should buy organic free range is better then nothing.

It's a terrible terrible thing we are doing to these animals every single day for millions of chickens.

I am poor I can barely afford it myself but I make an effort BECAUSE of the animals.

I chose price over the animal welfare

ok its a living being, i dont have a problem eating said living being, but i do have a problem in the way it lived prior to its death. i know its only an animal, but do you have pets? would you leave your dog in its kennel full of excrement and urine, with no room to move, and no chance at any exercise? of course not, so whats the real difference?

for those that say they cant afford chicken, buy free range turky its a a great source of protein and very very healthy.

Its not just about the animal's welfare, or how it tastes, but more importantly imo, which chickens are better for us humans to consume.

It's been scientifically shown that these mass produced chickens are not supplying the levels of protein and nutrients that chickens used to provide 20 odd years ago. They also contain higher levels of fat - this is not healthy.

So, if such animals are doing more harm to our diets than good, should we be concerned that low income families may not be able to afford them? Sounds to me that if the chicken fails to provide the basic dietary benefits its supposed to, perhaps such people are better off turning to other food sources.
