Best era of PC Gaming?

I get the impression the last century was the golden age by the response on the thread so far. While chucking out some old games recently I tried installing an old favourite, commanche3 - wondering how it would look x years on. Wouldnt install :(

It would be boring if games were bettered all the time. It is to be expected when a game of significant magnitude isn't bested for years to come.

But 8 years since Deus Ex and nothing has even come close, we haven't really had a single game like it. I just think its a sad indication of the industry :(

Is Deus Ex that good?

I've actually got a copy, played it for a bit but never got into it.

Days of Suikoden/Vandal Hearts on the PSX, Terror from the deep, and the release of FF7! Great days.
For online it was easily 99-2003, when Team Fortress Classic was at it's peak.

Actually mine is Deus Ex: invisible war, does that make a difference?

Yeah it means you might touch small children

Nah Im only kidding :p

I actually like Invisible War, i think if Deus Ex had never happened then it would have been a good game, the story and path options were good and it was nice to see what had happened to the world. it was let down by a poor engine and some shoddy design decisions (like the universal ammo and no interface)

Oh dear. :(

Gametap has it for free, only, i've got Vista and it won't download, what a gutter.

has to be the mid 80's.

c64 / speccy etc

proper small companies and bedroom coders doing games they loved for people who enjoyed them before big business took over.

Days of Suikoden...snip...
Wow been a long time since I played that game, brilliant!

Can't really think of a period tbh just milestones. I think it was red alert 1 that got me in to gaming, playing FF8 was the next big wow for me and hence led to FF7, MGS 1 was also mind blowingly brilliant.

If I had to say a period it was about 2002 for me when I started online gaming mainly MMO's, I'm just so competitive the only single player game I ever play is GTA.

I dont think its entirely that though, it seemed like that was genuinely the direction they wanted to take it, still we can hope for Deus Ex 3 being good...

I'd have to go with the 80s..

You could write a computer game just as easily as many of the other game developers. Now you need serious investment and the gameplay has normally gone south too.
