Ok despite being warned by members of this board not to upgrade my card, like an idiot I went ahead anyway and all in all the results are pretty good -well I'm happy anyhow ;)

My computer stats: P4 3.4, 2GB ram, MOBO is an MS7046 which is a 1.0a PCI-Express board.

My old card was a 7600GT, my new card is a 4850. The only other change I have made is to upgrade my PSU from 350w to 600w.

Here are my old and new 3dMark06 scores including frame rates for the various tests (ignore the scores in red I think they are the highest scores ever recorded by 3dMark06 from other users) screen resolution was 1280x1024 in all tests.

Individual games :-

RTW&EB :No change and in fact fraps are reporting that the fps are even lower with the new card but they don't feel slower.

X3 -Reunion: My frame rates in the menus have jumped from around 118fps to over 400fps
in game the fps have not really changed much maybe a 10-20% increase.

MIITW: FPS has definately improved, in the battle of Agincourt fps have gone from an average of 13 fps to 35 fps during the movie and from 12 fps to 23 fps at the start of the actual battle.

Supreme Commander: FPS was 20 at the start of a skirmish battle, now they are 60fps.

All in all apart from RTW which for some reason seems to buck the trend I have seen improvements in all the other games I have so far tested. It seems that the newer the game is the bigger the improvement which I guess makes sense.

I also suspect that although the fps are now slightly lower in RTW that their is now a limit to how low they can drop so for instance I think that no matter how big or how many armies there are in a battle that the fps will still be playable where as on the old card the game would have shuddered to a halt, if this is true then I think this is a good trade off.

One other thing to note is that other 4850 users have reported card temperatures of about 95C, my card has so far not risen above 80C so I think that shows that my PC is not capable of pushing the card to it's limit.

Conclusion: I'm glad I upgraded and I think Iv'e now done enough to ensure that I will easily get another 3 years out of my PC maybe even another 5 before I need to buy a new one -before this upgrade I was considering replacing it for the release of EmpireTW.

I think this upgrade has saved me a lot of money and of course in 3-5 years PC's will be even better than they are today but probably still cost about the same. :-)

:) you are definitely CPU bound and can have WAY more out of that card. But no doubt it's an upgrade and I'm glad you are satisfied.

However, you can probably snag a used 965p chipset board along with an e6400 or e2180 for dirt cheap, and I suggest saving up and doing so as you'll unleash quite a bit of performance.

I am running 4850 on a p4 3.6 prescott =) It works awesomely

my next will be a p35 mobo with an E2180 with some ram =)

oh and temp wise i've seen 87 high.

Nice upgrade, you may even find you can increse your game settings and add AA/AF with little or no:) loss in frame rate. It can do all this extra work whilst it is waiting for the cpu, so you dont loose performance.

Yes I have found this in RTW, although I don't seem to have increased my framerates overall I can now play the game with all the graphic effects at maximum and the FPS still remain exactly the same whereas with my old card the FPS would drop depending on what effects were turned on :)

not a bad little upgrade, but as has been said, your CPU is holding back a little, can you OC it a bit ?

This has crossed my mind and I have read the overclocking thread but I really don't have a clue on this stuff and I'd be too scared to experiment lol

Edit: added screen resolution to my original post which was 1280x1024 during all tests.
