Hi

In a few days I'll be moving into my new house so am after a bit of help with the setup. Been waiting a long time to get this going so I want it to all be right and there's too much to think about!
I'm just about to buy myself a Panasonic 42" PX80 which will be setup in the living room along with Sky+, PS3 and a surround sound system with floorstanders at the front and rears on stands.
I've roughy worked out where I want things. I think the TV should be in front of the fireplace as it leaves room for the sofa and 2 armchairs either side. Plus the TV won't be in front of the windows.

Got some questions. Will have more later when I remember so this thread will be added to. Pics and to scale plan below, (note the room has now been decorated)

Main question-Will the 2.5m viewing distance be about right?

Sadly, wall mounting seems out of the question as that beam is about 1.5m up. Unless there are some mounts that would attach to that middle bit of the fireplace? Any ideas on that?

Looks like it'll be a stand though which ain't ideal with my drunk housemates stumbling around :p Looking at a black, 3 level style that are fairly common. May spend a bit more for a stand/mount in one...

Speaker placement is the next worry so looking for tips there

Also what are the best wire management solutions.

Forgot what else I was going to ask so will leave it there for now. Thanks:)

What a myriad of replies :p Did I ask too much?

Went for a £50 black glass stand in the end. It's almost 30Kg so should be sturdy when put together.

Just ordered the TV too  :D

Still after some advice on how to best cover up the cables, especially the rears which are trailing across the carpet on the route between kitchen and living rooms.

Also, where should I put the sub? I guess in the fireplace behind the TV wouldn't be great

Wall mounting would be awesome, but that silly beam and recessed area means it would be an awful lot of work.

What tv you go for, 50 plasma i hope :D

Really wanted to wall mount but that was the most sensible wall to have the TV on, in terms of windows doors and where furniture is placed.

Was a stretch for the £647 to get the 42" px80, sadly not 50" but of course plasma :)

TV arrives on Thursday along with Planet Earth on BD so pics will follow of course

I watch my 24" from 2.4m and that's pretty much perfect for me. Of course it's subjective.

Can't help with the other items I'm afraid as I lifted the floorboards to lay the cable underneath and then chased it into the wall with faceplates at plug socket level for my cable management.

Since my main viewing position is form where your sofa is I just put the speakers either side of that and put soemthing down to stop the door knocking it over.

I know you didn't mean 24" Asprilla. I watch tv shows in my bedroom on my 24" PC monitor from 1.5m which is fine but not living room viewing.
Just been chatting to my housemate and assessing the room more. We may be able to get the speaker wire under some of the carpet edges

Why don't you screw a board to the horizontal beam then mount the tv on the board?

Make a false front to that centre vertical beam and you can then hide all the wire behind it.

It'd be even easier to do that mounting it to a normal wall. You could just use a ton of wood screws.

I had thought about a ceiling mount but was cautious as to what would be drilled into with another tenant about. Also, they are quite expensive.

Andy. That is so clever and so simple at the same time! Good thinking. Sadly it's a bit late as I already have bought the stand

Tv comes tomorrow! Feel like a schoolboy.
-Ad- guess what the first blu ray film Lovefilm.com sent me from my list of 20?

Starship Troopers!

o sweet, nice one.

Pics pics pics. But get the tv setup and out of dynamic crap mode :D

Pics will sure follow but this house is without internet at the moment (on my phone now) so will be a delay.
But yea, will use the recommended settings and tweak them some first. Also got T2 on BD (£5!) which has a THX setup. Is that advised?

Ye definately try the various settings on avforusm, then tweak it using the THX thingy as well.

I might try that myself, as I have some awesome settings for my tv but have never tried to see what THX settings are like compared to those from an ISF calibrator.

Great price on T2, cost me a tenner last year, but still looks awesome. I love the way blu-ray shows funny things that you would never see before, like the stuntmen who look nothing like the stars, etc :D
