is there a specific folder structure that is required to get the PS3 to see movie files?

i use nullriver medialink to stream and due to my network not being all that good it freezes for a few seconds every now and then... so i want to stick some movies on a usb stick...

doesnt work in the root, so i tried making a "PS3" folder and it doesnt see that... and the file was an mp4 so should work...

any ideas?

just press triangle on the USB stick then select 'display all' then it all comes up. Its a mystery why its needed but there you go.

It'll play most xvid/divx's so no need to switch it into mp4 unless its an MKV

as JaFFa said, you can just press triangle to display all.

or if you creat the follwoing folders on the root of the memory stick then you will be able to access content without needing to press triangle.

Hope you don't mind me asking in here but I have an 8Gb memory stick, however if i try to save a file in excess of 4Gb to it (HD video) it say's that the drive is full?

Does the PS3 recognise video files over 2Gb anyway?

It's formatted in FAT32.

It's a file system limitation.

Yes it recognises files over 2gig, but you can only use external storage mediums that are formatted in fat32 which limits the file size to 2gig.

Using WMP11 or other media server software you con directly transfer files of any size from your PC to the ps3, I have files of 8gig and over on my ps3.

Indeed the file size limit for FAT32 is 4GB not 2GB. This limit only applies to external storage as they have to use FAT32. There are many apps out there that can be used to split files into nice chunks. Most downloaded HD stuff is MKV so something like mkv2vob is perfect. The PS3s HDD itself uses a propriety format and does not have a file size limit. I've copied 20GB+ files to it no problem. I do this by setting up a simple web server on my PC and using the PS3 browser to download it in the background while I play a game or watch another vid etc.

The structure for external storage is as follows, case sensitive. You can add subfolders if you like. As said you can always do triangle > display all.
