A question about free post envelopes

When a company sends you mail, even junk mail, and it contains a freespot envelope do they pay if that individual envelope is posted or do they just pay a certain rate to allow for free postage up to a certain amount of volume?

I only ask because I was just sifting through some junk mail and I thought it would be satisfying to post the envelopes back empty....if they had to pay for it.
 
Only if it is posted.

You need a contract with Royal Mail, you get a number to put on the stamp/sticker that relates to your company.

The sorting offices count them and bill you.
 
I think they do have to pay only if its posted.

I tear all but the return envelope in half and mail it back usually (including the envelope they sent it to me in).

And if I'm really feeling nasty I'll defecate in the return envelope too.

A bit stupid because the return address will often be an innocent 3rd party mailing company which has been given the contract, and not the actual company who decided to target you.

how can they be innocent if they are the ones doing the clients dirty work? :)
 
My problem is I have to send out loads of consent forms to parents and about a 1/3 come back.
We then resend and we're lucky if another 1/3 come back.
It then goes on and on until we finally get all consent forms back.
My idea is to put either a SAE with the consent form or a freepost envelope and I was thinking that freepost would be cheaper.

my dad knew someone who used to work at a dump, he'd attach the envelope to a washing machine (or other suitably heavy object) and then wheel it down on his trailer to the local postal depot. wonder if the weight of the item sent back has any bearing on the company?
 
I am actually going to mail their mail back to them with a letter explaining to them I don't want their crap through my door any more.

hate junk mail, goes straight in the recycling.
