I'm getting a £1000 voucher to buy a bike through the Ride2Work scheme (I should be getting it this week) and I wanna get the best valued pound per pound hardtail bike for £1000.

I'm quite confused as to which bike to get as all the best £1000 hard tail mountain bikes seem to be Merlin or On One bikes which I can't buy from Evans Cycles.

So put simply... What is the best £1000 hardtail bike from Evans Cycles ONLY?

I'm aware of the different hardtail bikes that are out there but to be honest, I would be using it more for commuting but also wanna go on the odd mountain and jump (but not mad jumps).

So, I'm more after a lightweight racy type of hardtail bike that handles well and accelerates well too.

Is this any good... GT Zaskar Expert 2008 Mountain Bike

Are there any other hardtail bikes (not full suspension please,) that you can recommend to me for £1k?

Many thanks to all replies in advance.

P.S. Please don't take the mickey outta me but this will be my 1st bike in 22 years. I'll be using this hard tail mountain bike for general off track use and commuting on the street.

I really don't know anything about bikes (at all now) since I got outta the bike scene when my BMX got nicked!

Specialized is definitely the best option in my opinion, would take one over a saracen every time.

Why is the Specialized Stumpjumper HT Comp 2007 Mountain so good though and is it better than the GT Zaskar Expert 2008 that I mentioned above?

*****... I just noticed that Specialized Stumpjumper HT Comp 2007 is 13.5 ince only!

So I can't get that one!

I need at least 17-19 inch.

I'd seriously consider a Tank Race Elite. It's a bit of a leftfield choice, but as a race oriented hardtail for the money it takes a lot of beating. £930, has a Easton elite frame (which is £300 alone, bought separately) Maguar Menja forks and XT kit. It only weighs 25lbs, which is astonishing for the money. They're not a very well known brand, and are distributed directly by Rolling Resistance.

The site is poor, but it's worth giving them a call. If this doesn't float your boat then the Zaskar will be great.

Edit, guess who didn't read the thread properly! Ahh well, never mind. It's still a good bike, it's worth a plug :p

spec wise the gt wins, LX is good kit :) and gt is'nt trying to pimp it up with a more expensive rear mech, it's just full LX. out of those three think i'd grab the GT.

was'nt last years zaskar full XT? with a silver/red frame?

personally i'd buy mine again, Merlin Malt4 with a reba and kit it up with full XT for under £1000 and i think Merlin does cycle to work scheme?
