Hi can anyone recommend a car for 5-6k for my Mum has athritis in her wrists

Needs to have the following:

Automatic
Powersteering
Air con
Quite good mpg

Been looking at the Polo's but if anyone has any other throughts then please let me know.

Thank you.

Nissan Micra 1.2 SE/SVE Automatic with AirCon, from 03 on. The later models also have keyless entry. You should be able to get a late / low mileage one for that budget.

My parents have one, and having driven it quite a few times, I think its a very good small car. Very easy to drive, very light steering, good visability, easy to get out of, excellent around down, funky shape, good fuel economy etc etc.

Not quick, then again, you're looking for different criteria compared to a M3 type car that's designed to tear up the tarmac.

The new micra, as i have said before, is poor and has a number of reliability issues. A car with french engineering and japanese styling is always going to be crap. a fiesta would be a much better recommendation.

The new Micra isn't 'poor' and it doesn't have any major reliability issues - no more than any other small car and certainly no more than a 'Ford Fiesta' which is hardly renowned for running likely clockwork until 100k. My parents' car has 50k on the clock and its been faultless.

How many have you owned?

Exactly.

I don't need to own one to know it isn't better than a fiesta. Much the same way that i don't have to be stabbed in the face to know that being stabbed isn't nice. The new micra is naff, end of.

Well, at least your prepared to admit that you're spouting, and that you've no idea what you're talking about. Isn't it wonderful that we have people on this forum offering advice about cars they know haven't driven, haven't owned and know nothing about? Get back under your bridge, and try driving some cars before you start spouting again.

Assets
Distinctive cheeky looks, remarkably pleasant interior, good ride, build quality, good visibility, extremely easy to drive, nice simple auto gearboxes, lively diesel engines

Drawbacks
A little squidgy to drive, engines could be a smidge quieter, electric power steering very light at town speeds, but not much else to complain about at all

Verdict
Very good in all respects, with some of the best small diesels around

I don't like micra's therefore i dont recommend them, the last one i was in felt floaty and the auto gearbox felt jerky. It's impossible to drive every car out there, therefore i give an opinion, which i am entitled to, which i have based on my experience of both cars. My experience of the Mirca was okay-ish but the fiesta was more positive. You can read as many reviews as you want but one mans pot of gold as another mans bucket of poo.

I like Janesby, he's taken much of the flak away from me in this forum of late :D

Glad i could be of service. *tips hat*

I have driven both the fiesta auto 1.4 and micra auto 1.2/1.4 reasonable amounts.

I'd have to say that there's little between them, the fiesta feels more "solid" and better put together. The micra has more character and feels a bit more interesting than the plain fiesta.

Fiesta is a better drive and is more of a drivers car but the micra has the better autobox (both of these were 07 cars)

the last one i was in felt floaty and the auto gearbox felt jerky.

The "last one you were in"? ROTFL. You've clearly never driven one one. One thing the Micra isn't in standard spec is either 'floaty' or 'jerky'. Certainly no more than a blimmen Ford Fiesta 1.2 Finesse. Unless of course, you're comparing a standard spec Micra to some sort of souped up Fiesta on shorter springs and Koni adjustables.

Luckily, around 90 percent of Micras sold in Japan are automatic, so it was worth the company developing its own new four-speed transmission for the range, a conventional auto rather than a CVT (continually variable transmission) as in the Primera. The only properly new advanced trickery this electronically controlled 'box features is something called 'extended slip lock-up control', which basically means that gear changes are less jerky than in earlier 'boxes. And besides simplicity, another advantage of this gearbox is price: it starts from just £8895 in the 1.2 S and £9895 in the 1.2 SE (air-con, keyless entry and ignition, electric mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, leather steering wheel, glove box, under-seat storage tray and part-leather upholstery), which compares very favourably indeed to many competitors. This factor alone ruled out the fitment of Nissan's CVT-6 transmission, as used in the Primera.

Now be quiet and stop spouting.

I don't care about all the jargon. You are clearly a Micra fanboy if one ever did exist based on over recommendations you have made in the past.

I have offered an opinion, it doesn't mean i am spouting. I PERSONALLY hate the micra because it looks like it was put together by a 5 year old.

I doubt there's a single person that has driven every car, so does it mean that they are not entitled to an opinion? If i had 6k in my pocket, it wouldn't go on a tonka toy. But then again that is my opinion and may be incorrect.

I'm no Micra fan either but I can't see how any of your criticisms dont apply equally to the Fiesta.

I just don't like the micra and thats it.

And you are blatently a ford fanboy, so what?

Not really, i have recommended other cars than ford but i have mostly been exposed to fords so i will lean towards them. It doesn't mean i'll blindly buy one over another car if it is superior but in this case i don't find the micra superior at all. I would rather have a Clio, Corsa, Fabia or a Polo over a Micra.

I have driven a few cars and none of my favorites were fords bar a Fiesta ST, i drive an MGB at the weekends which is infinately more fun than my escort. I also did my pass plus in a Mini cooper which was also a hoot but is out of my price range. I am by no means a fanboy.
