Firmware (v.2.40) video walkthrough

looks ok

i think a few people are expecting it to change everything [save the whale and stop global warming] so it wont live up to expectation and sony will get slated

im just looking for a maked improvement

expecting nothing means that anything good comes as a surprise

I got the impression from the other thread that the actual firmware was released today. :( Oh well.

Also that bloke has a well good voice.

This trophy thing, will all my old games have trophies to unlock?

Games like Skate, tony hawks and motorstorm

Looks like cross game chat is there, sorry jihad ... go troll somewhere else.

Cross game messaging is there, cross game chat isn't. Cross game chat being the ability to start a voice chat session even while playing different games, so you can play and talk at the same time. Messaging involves pausing the game and typing out a single message which is a much more cumbersome method.

While it's a step forward, the two biggest features i hoped for haven't been included:

The ability to start a voice chat session with individuals (or, ideally, the ability to create a chat room for a group of friends) while playing different or even the same game.

The ability to invite people to your server while playing, even if they're in a different game. If they accepted the invite the game they would automatically quit the game they are playing, start the other game and connect to the server they were invited to (obviously they would need to insert the disk if needed). I know we can 'invite' people via a message, but it just isn't the same, the person will still need to start the game and then find the server you're on.

The more i think about this, the more disappointed i become. While the ability to read a message while playing is a welcome change, nothing else introduced remotely interests me, and clearly very little has been attempted to improve the currently lackluster online side of the PS3.

In game music will improve certain single player PS3 games i'm sure (EDIT: And a couple of online games too), but its a feature i could have lived without.

Trophies, personally i couldn't care less, but then that's just my own preference as the gamerscore system is immensely popular on the 360.

Very little has been attempted to draw PS3 users together into a closer online experience, games will still feel more disconnected with each other and along with that so will players.

Just my 2p

Right at the start of the first video. He receives and sends a message to Jeff.

See my post above, that's in game messaging, not what is commonly known as in game chat where people can communicate via voice whilst playing.

er a message is not chat
a message (in on-line or off-line world) is via text and chat is via voice ;)

The update looks good for PS3 owners, tbh I can't believe up until this update you've had to quit out of a game to view a message! (I'm not trolling or anything, just saying, no wonder the XMB used to get a slating, but things are looking up for it :))
