Firmware (v.2.40) video walkthrough

Looks a lot slicker than live.

my opinion is that xmb is better than dashboard

i think it looks cleaner which makes it easier to navigate

hopefully this new update will set my opinion in stone

trophy system is explained more clearly here

i like how it works better than the xbox achievements anyway
that should stop the scorewhring

Here's the unfortunate news: you'll need to earn trophies in games that are patched to include them even if you've already completely beaten the game. For example, if GTA IV received a trophy update, you'd need to play through it again – even if you achieved 100% completion – in order to earn its trophies.

i think this needs sorting

to be honest they should implement it when all games are compatible

and not make you work your butt off for something you have already done

so its a fail in my book

it seems like features like trophies and user-music via XMB will only be supported in games created with the new developers tools that have apparently already been released in advance of the firmware update

ingame music only on supported games as well?

i think this godsend of an update is turning out to be a bit rubbish

so none of this really benefits us existing ps3 owners with lots of playtime under our belts and nothing to show for it

all i wanted was my own tracks and streamed playlists for burnout paradise and skate

He said he turned the background music off ingame and then went to the XMB and could play music as normal, so I think it would be for every game, hopefully.

Several sources have stated existing games will require a patch. As the 2.4 devkits have been around for months now i imagine any recent game will already have a patch ready and rearing to go as soon as 2.4 is released, whether this is the case with older games i'm unsure.

All achievements obtained before 2.4 will need to be reobtained to gain a trophy, however i imagine this is because the achievements will be redone for each game, for example i don't see a way for the rank system in MGS4 to translate straight over to the trophy system - it will need some reworking.

It has also been confirmed that you will need to exit a game to initiate voice chat, which is a huge letdown for me.

[EDIT] 1up have posted a comprehensive guide:

From what i've read you can't stream music in game, only listen to music that's on the PS3s harddrive. While this is not a huge surprise, it is going to be a pain having all 40gig of my music collection in two places at once (PC and PS3).

tbh sony has never really been interested in online gaming and only now with new staff on board these past couple of years have they actually started making imprrovements, before that the company was very poorly run, it is now on the way to becoming better but far off the high mark that has been set

Ah :)

Btw.. he didn't mention cross-game voice chat in either of the videos

Go to 3:18 on the video here.

The three boxes say "Create message", "Compare trophies" and finally "Start new chat".

I cannot wait for this patch tbh. Hopefully, developers will go back and patch their games for trophies. In-game sound would be great for the PSN games like the ones he's already mentioned (e.g. Stardust). Never really seen the point in FPSing online with music playing because you cannot hear game sounds.

I have a sudden urge to play all the games I've got to get the trophies and build up my level. Definitely adds to game replayability.

It just stops the in-game soundtrack and plays your own music instead. The game sfx are still played. If you find your music is drowning the sfc out you can lower the music volume. :)

Cross game messaging is there, cross game chat isn't. Cross game chat being the ability to start a voice chat session even while playing different games, so you can play and talk at the same time. Messaging involves pausing the game and typing out a single message which is a much more cumbersome method.

Go to Part 1 http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/29/firmware-v240-walkthrough-part-1-the-xmb/
Although he doesn't mention it, at 45 seconds into the video you can see 'Start New Chat' with the headset icon. So it looks like the feature's in (Unless it's actually greyed out) :) Now the only thing we need is game invites!
