4870 overkill for 1680x1050 res ?

My samsung pebble monitor has a max resolution of 1680x1050 so obviously i cant game any higher than that, i want atleast 4xAA and 16xAF with max settings in cod4

what will the performance difference be between the 4850 and 70 at that res and settings,quite a lot or not much at all ?

basically im debating whether to get the 50 or 70 but im not sure which suits my needs better

I'd get the 4850, overclock it and drop to 4AA and 8AF

By the time any games worth owning are out such as battlefield 3 the 4870 will be old news so I'd get the 4850.

I also would take it off your mitts if it weren't for the fact that the card is just waaaaaay too big. Looks like I'll be heading the ATI way again.

How long before 512MB memory becomes a problem at 1680x1050 res? Say with a modest 4xAA...

I am so tempted by the 4870's but its just the whole 512MB thing thats making me pause.

And there is no news on when the 1GB versions will be available...

4870 would be my choice, gives you a bit more headroom for more demanding releases in the future. You'll notice the difference in titles like Crysis for sure.

There's also the possibility that you might not have the same monitor forever.

yes the dilema of 4850 or 4870. I just ordered the 70 due to arrive tomorrow- ive held off 6 months buying a card i have a x1950 pro just now- monitor supports 1600x1200 max res.

4850 might have done but i just thought "**** it"

Well you must look at the games and when they are coming i think even though battlefield 3 is due dec08 its more likely jan 09 by that time 4870 will be bettered by a same or cheaper priced card or setup.

Theres a Asus 4850 with 1024mb on overclockers worth a look in if your worried about 512mb
