Today, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 officially stepped up the global war for Nürburgring supremacy, as General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove a stock ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. That's significantly faster than the 7:29 lap set by the Nissan GT-R. We can't wait to see what the rest of the world's supercar competitors are gonna do now to step up their game.

3 seconds over a track that long isnt that much of a difference... Its like a coupld of better braking points leading onto long straights...

Still, quite imressive

3 seconds on a track like the Nurburgring isnt much, until you consider how hard they are having to push to get around in 7:26 :p Thats an average speed of over 115mph!

Is this definately on stock suspension setup and normal road tyres? R888s don't count :)

Rumour is the GTRs time wasn't so I doubt this was either. Still good driving though.

This is like 50k or 60k in the states i think, to say it's a performance car bargain is really understating it, if they sold vettes here for like 30k (base car is like 25k out there) i think they would find quite a few buyers

That is certainly quick, the last 3 corvettes have been pretty quick and Chevvy are certainly getting this corner thing sorted now.

Awesome!

But with 147bhp more than the Nissan GTR it's hardly surprising it's able to claw 3 seconds off it.

That is true but it is also slightly cheaper so what it has in engine it lacks in the handling/technology department. So no doubt it isnt as quick through the corners but certainly makes up for it down those straights.

Whilst maximum lateral G is not an overall indicator of great handling performance, it does demonstrate the ability of the car in corners.

Consequently when you see:

Z06 - +1.09G road holding (Automobile Nov 2005)
GT-R - +0.99G (manufactures estimates)

.....then the GT-R may not necessarily go quicker through the corners than the Z06. It's a marginal difference but a difference nonetheless. Images, preconceptions and technology can sometimes be decieving.

Just got back from the 'ring (few hours ago)

I've got some photos of this thing going round, I'll post them up tomorrow if anyones interested. OMG, did it make a noise as it blasted past the car park / main straight.

But...but...but what about the OMGWTFBBQ CART SPRINGZZZZZZZ!!!1111oneone that uneducated dolts love to knock the Corvette for employing.....

I do love that. All those computers, all that hi-tech trickery, four wheel drive, and the Nissan GTR can't even beat a cart sprung plastic American heap with a pushrod V8 motor :D:D The sheer level of urine extracting that I'll be doing tomorrow with the Playstation generation morons that I end up having to interact with will just be immense....

its all clarksons fault

he always mocks american cars to make a sensationalist point. His review of the vectra VXR was the complete opposite to just about every other review in the press.

But again, it was sensationalist to make the point the vec VXR can overcome the limits of traction very easily with 280hp going through the front wheels.
