Thought i'd have a bash on BF2 last night, but the tiniest scratch on the CD means it fails during install..

is it legal to download an ISO from a torrent site? if i own the original game/cd key etc?

See i wouldnt say so because you are technically using your own CD Key which you paid good money for and it could be considered a "backup" copy in a way!

It is however a very touchy issue and im sure a lot of people may have different opinions. But as I've said i wouldnt see why you should have to go buy the game again anyways!

It'd be illegal to download it from a torrent site because you'd concurrently be uploading it to other people (i.e. distributing copyrighted content to other people who may not have a legitimate claim on it).

Can't see anything wrong with it if you grab it via say FTP or NNTP though.

It's possible to run it using a ripped cd image without needing a no-cd crack, this allows you to play online assuming you have a legit cd key, its what i do.

hmm i think the CD would still work when playing the game, just a tiny installation file that it crashes on.. thanks guys, will give it a shot.

i wouldn't think twice about doing that, if you've paid for the licence, who cares where you get it from (imo)

Software vendors have been using the arguement for years that you're not actually buying the game, you're buying a license to play the game.

I don't see why you can't turn it around on them and do it, if they argue it'll only confirm the fact that they're blatant hypocrites.

i would say the software developers ect would say it was illegal, however logically its not if you have already purchased the game.

i have an ISO image of every game i own just incase i lose/break it. some games do detect whether you are using an emulation tool.

yeah, i don't think i'd even have to use an image or a no cd crack to play it, as the real CD should fulfil that bit fine.. it's literally, only the installation!

you can legally own a .iso of a game that you own a physical (fully licenced) copy, you just cannot distribute it. So downloading via bittorrent would be illegal. Might be worth checking if you can download it via http or getttin a trial version that needs a legit cd key to unlock. I think the hitman series did that, they released the full game to download, but you needed a code to unlock past the first level.

Hope that is food for thought

if you install if it from a mounted image when you come to play the game would it not look for the game_disk being on that drive ie D:/ ?

i use to have two DVD drives and if i installed it on the LG i had to use that to run the game not the pionner ?

I defintely wouldn't use a torrent to download it, as someone pointed out earlier that you'd be uploading the file at the same time.

If at some point in the future your ISP got surpeoned they would have to provide your details and you could be sued for illegally supplying software.

It's a long long shot that this would happen and you may be happy to take the risk, but remember more and more people are getting caught using torrents etc these days, so beware.

Have you got any mates you could borrow a CD from to install?

Regards

Taff

If you are worried about the legalities of it then can I suggest that you get your hands on some Brasso and a lint free rag?

Simply polish the CD with the Brasso in small circles and it should repair the CD.

As daft as it sounds, I have used this method to repair some badly scratched CDs in the past and it does work!

check out number 6....seems baking soda toothpaste can do it as well, Arm & Hammer would be your best bet.
