I've got to do a lot of travelling this week, but unlike usually (pool car and fuel car), I've got to use my own car, and claim back the milage. Now, I'm not adverse to this, as long as I'm getting reimbursed the correct amount, but I'm not sure I am going to be.

They are saying I get 20p/mile, which frankly, I think is proposterous.

20p/mile to fuel, and account for wear and tear on my own vehicle? I work it out that I'm going to be spending a minimum of £70 on fuel (200 miles each way), but I'll only be making £80 from the whole trip

Sound right or wrong to you?

Inland Revenue guidelines state that 40p per mile is the accepted rate for reimbursement of personal use of car for business means. (The missus is an accountant :) )

TBH 20p is a joke, but AFAIK there's nothing you can do about it as there's no legal minimum.

Sounds far too low, i get 40p per mile if i use my own car or the option to hire a car (A4 / Volvo V50 type) and claim back the cost of petrol.

Sounds like they expect you to own a 1.2 corsa eco box.

I would ask them for a hire car of appropriate size to do the trip in.

sounds wrong, I get double that. Your company should also be asking you to provide proof that you have business mileage cover on your insurance policy before asking you to use your own vehicle

I do have business cover, and they have seen the certificate/documents before.

I don't see a 1.2 corsa being as economical as my car at motorway speeds tbh.

I think they expect me to own a diesel

thats truly rubbish, you should really be getting 40ppm. I'm guessing you don't get a car allowance or anything?

Just refuse and expense a car/train & taxi (my place encourages us to train it to meetings etc... which i don't mind most of the time but can be a pain)

They refused to pay for a train fare (+ taxis + extra time), because it would cost more. Damn right it would cost more, nearly double what they are expecting to give me per mile.

i get 35p a mile and think that it's too low with current fuel prices! at 20p i'd tell them to shove it and provide me with a hire car

If it should be 40ppm then you can claim the other 20ppm back from HMRC.
plenty of docs about it online.

35p here, which given the way fuel prices have gone barely covers it when you account for wear and tear and depreciation. I would refuse to go for what they have offered.

No - you claim tax relief on the 20ppm, so either 20% or 40% of that depending on what tax bracket you're in - don't you?

ive actually just put forward onto the work "forum" asking if they're considering an increase from 35p a mile. They'll probably say FO but it's worth trying :p

28p a mile here, which is a joke IMO. They say it covers fuel but what about the wear and tear of keep having to use my car to go onsite? Tight eejits.

I get 19ppm and the extra 21p I claim as relief from HMRC at the end of the year.
Usually ends up with a nice bonus at the end of each financial.

Although, even 40ppm is a joke in these times.

As far as i know, the HMRC are just guidelines, it's up to whatever the policy is in place tht your company uses. For me it's a regular user allowance of £60 per month, then 36.9p per mile for the first 9000 miles then changes to 20.1p for any miles after that, this is for cars from 1001 to 1501cc. By getting nearly 60mpg out of my car means that the mileage i make pretty much pays for the fuel, insurance and the finance on my car which is nice!

20ppm does seem a little low though.
