yo,

Installed linux mint today and nust say its very good, it doesnt appear any different to ubuntu though. Am I missing something?

I quite like the custom gnome menu, got mediatomb and windows shares working really easily. Video worked out of the box. It uses the same repo's as ubuntu which is handy as I used ubuntu a lot.

Just got AWN to install tommorrow.

I've been running Linux Mint 5 as my main OS since its release.

It's a real pleasure to use and IMO is definitely a step up from Ubuntu. Who wouldn't want to have MP3s, DVDs and Flash video all working out-of-the-box? :)

Here's what my desktop looked like before I installed AWN and Screenlets:

Is mint gnome based or KDE? I know mint is based on ubuntu so maybe thats why it feels the same?
The main edition uses GNOME for the desktop environment, but there is a KDE edition of Linux Mint 5 in development, which is just about to get its first release candidate.

That's pretty sweet dude, I'm deciding what distro I want to install on my machine to play around with. Was going to be either Arch or Ubuntu but Mint looks pretty good too, might give each one a go and see which one I like best.... :).

I noticed you have Artrage 2 running on mint.. Is it native on tux now as I cant see a wine window

One of the great things about Linux is that you get so much choice. :)

ArtRage 2 is running under WINE (1.0rc5). You need to put a copy of gdiplus.dll in the WINE system32 directory for it to install and run. Unbelievably, it seems to run faster under WINE than natively on Windows, plus it even supports pressure sensitivity on my Wacom tablet.

i love Mint 5, but.......i cant get windows share working properly. i cant "see" any XP machines on my wrokgroup.

i got the feeling that it's my router (netgear DG834GT) stopping Mint (any *buntu distro) to "see" any XP machines.

funny enough, i tried Mint 5 LIVE cd at work machine, i can see 1,000 XP machines lol

if i download and install smb4k (KDE) then i can "see" my XP machines.

so i think something do with the netgear router doesnt like *buntu network browser, what do you think guys?

cheers

I have the same router and have networking working with windows.

My old samba guide didnt help much tbh.

All the settings are in Administration > Shared Folders

This new method is a lot better to older ubuntu distro's I used in the past.

What's that theme mate? Any linkage? :)

I'm using the RC1 version and I find it just takes for ever to finish booting - sometimes over five minutes. Other than that it's great, but Mint 4.0 was my previous favourite distro.

are people using this on laptops? if so, whats the load/unload cycling like for laptop HDD's? i know ubuntu has a bug with the load/unload cycle on certain HDD's, and its stopping me from installing :( because my hard drive is loading/unloading every 10 seconds or so. :/
