Want to watch some classic movies, so decided to watch one a week from a top 100 from 1 downwards, but the question is what top 100?

Have looked at these so far;

IMDB
Totalfilm
Halliwells

Obviously opinions will vary but Total Film's would be out for me due to rating Dr Strangelove down at #91 but even more worryingly not including 12 Angry Men at all. Halliwell's looks a bit more eclectic including Rashomon amongst others (it isn't that great a film) but still doesn't include 12 Angry Men at all. Which leaves us with the IMDB top 100, better than many although I'd ignore Wall-E at #6 (a. it is still in the cinema and b. it is too new to be in the list I think) and just pick up Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade at #101 in its place.

And for anyone else who wants a look at the lists to compare.
Total Film list
Halliwell's

Not seen those other two lists before but Halliwell's seems very biased towards films made 30+ years ago and TF's list seems very biased towards films made after 1990.

IMDB has the best list imo although it's far from perfect.

I think Channel 4 did a few ages ago but i think they did it by catagory like Family/love and war. But im sure they did the ultimate 100.

I know - scandalous, isn't it? To think that, in merely a century of cinema, it has been bested by two hundred and fifty films. It must be number 251. I mean, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura's in it, for goodness' sakes. I will not rest until an Arnie film is considered one of the best ever made...

I'd agree with weringo, in that the IMDB list is probably the most 'accurate' [note the marks], but it still has a number of films that patently don't deserve a mention [or at least, not yet].

My advice - which is a tad obvious, really - is to compile a master list of all the lists mentioned above, perhaps tallying scores that correlate to their rankings. The classics will appear in most - if not all - lists; the new/cult/pseud films will be filtered out.

semi-pro: While I have a great deal of respect for most of your opinions, you're just plain wrong about Rashomon. :p

Possibly. :p I'll admit I wasn't watching it under the best circumstances since I was cooking as well as watching with mates who were drinking but it just didn't seem that good and I thought Shichinin no samurai was fantastic. I do own it on DVD though so I'll probably retry in another few months and see if my opinion changes.

Why don't we start our own list of 100 greatest films.

Everyone gives a list of favourite films to someone, not necessarily 100, and whichever crop up the most, go 1st, 2nd etc.

Could be quite good :)
