The way I see it, the two components of a pc you are going to keep for an extremely long time - is the PSU and case, pick them right and you may never have to upgrade again.

In that case, which PSU and case would you pick?

The reason I ask, is because Im building my 1st build - and I want the very best for my money - I dont mind spending more for the components Im going to keep longest.

The coolermaster cosmos S is calling my name, I can get one from work for £130 with staff discount which is pretty good. (random seeing one of them, we mainly sell jeantech cases! guess where I work.... :p)

And the PSU would have to be of some quality. Dont know what really.

So lets discuss! :D

Case a sharkoon rebel 12 case. It's awesome for water cooling or air and no stupid see through panels or neon lights. great build qaulity, enough connections on the front. Just brilliant and only ~£70

Psu I would probably go ~1000w Thermaltake. I've Still got a thermaltake from 7 years ago, still going grate and the new ones get good reviews from most places.

My Tagan 480W is around 5 years old now, and has powered 4 different rigs. Get a Tagan or Seasonic and you won't need another PSU. Good long warranties also (not that I've needed them)

Tagan or seasonic ya say? Interesting. They seem to me to be like a "no thrills" but awesome PSU makers?

A question. If I bought a 800w psu, and was only using components which totalled to say 400w - would the psu be using 800w? Seems like a total waste of energy/energy bill money if so, but if it doesnt, I will probably get one to future proof it :)

possibly my case and my g5 mouse. wouldve said my enermax noisetaker 600w but ive gone and ordered a thermaltake toughpower 750w this evening. after almost 4 years of solid use its time to replace the old enermax.

something to think about is if your going to have a case for a long time, you want a design that ages well (visually), so something simple is probably better.

Well so far my PSU and monitor have lasted 2 years...I expect them to last at least another 2 years before I find them inadequate.

Good point :)

What PSU maker has the longest warranty? Only says on Tagans (3 year) on the OCUK website.

And what other cases would you recommend? Would like it to be quiet if poss. Was thinking antec 300 tbh! :D

Same here as regards to monitors. ill probably keep my benqfp241w till it dies, cant ever see the need for anything bigger. sadly i cant say the same about my 680i mobo, bought last july, died this week. not even a full years use:(

Hmm...the PSU's a Corsair HX 520W, so unless I get the money to Xfire a pair of HD4850s or something, it'll do fine for the foreseeable future.

So, whats the difference, apart from the modular side of these 2 PSUs?

Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU - £88

and

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU - £65

£20 more for modular and 20watts less? Are they both silent and awesome psus?

Not too bothered about modular - tidy them cables with a zip tie! :D Unless theres something Im missing?

That actually looks like quite a stylish case although I'm guessing not in aluminium which is something I quite like in a case. Certainly looks pretty well specified for the budget though.

Corsair have a 5 year warranty which is one of the longest in the industry, interestingly Huntkey (who make the OcUK branded ones) give a lifetime warranty apparantly - no idea how many people claim on it though or how well they deal with returns.

//edit the HX series of PSUs have Seasonic as their OEM, the TX series use CWT who are good but not generally thought of as being quite in the same league as Seasonic.

For me its probably my PSU, a Tagan 480W that has served me for well over three years now (and three diferent systems!) and then probably my 2407 Dell Monitor ... I don't plan to chance either in a very long time.

I have also had a Lian Li PC7 case for over 2 years!!!
