Is there anything they do like?

I'm all for respecting the culture and customs of others but this is taking it a step too far. There has to be a line drawn where the cultures and customs of others cannot infringe on OUR OWN culture, customs and rights. This is, after all, our country.

I decided to do a (cack-handed) redesign which some may find more applicable. :o

n.b. If offensive, mods, feel free to remove. If anyone else feels offended feel free to RTM my post. I feel no hatred or anger towards people who proclaim Islam as their religion

:D

I thought the dog curling out a turd in a turban would be more appropriate

Simple solution:

"Sorry Mr Mohammed, we'd love to respond to your 999 call, but the only team available is a dog handling team, and we know how you feel about them, so...

Anyway, we suggest that you wrestle the knife off your assailant with one hand, and try to stop the bleeding with the other. Remember that you may need to drop your mobile phone while this is happening, but don't worry - we've got all your details!

A couple of bobbies will call round tomorrow morning, just to see how you're getting on. Have a nice day!"

:)

Oh no :( They're at it again. This is one of the things I'm glad I left behind.

But generally turbans are worn by Sikhs and on the whole they don't stick their oar in at every opportunity, in fact I'd consider them a great example of religious diversity and integration in the UK :)

I read this earlier on today, it seems more like an oversight on the part of the marketing folks than any intention to upset. Unfortunate rather than directed when some simple checking could have prevented wasting valuable resources.

However I wonder if there were two versions of the poster created, one with Rex and one without then distributed accordingly if there would be accusations of racism/religious bigotry stemming from that and perhaps more interestingly whether it would be some muslims complaining, some Daily Mail readers or some combination of the two that were most vociferously looking to play the wounded martyr card.

What sort of oversight would that be then? Having the sheer audacity to include a picture of a cute cuddly puppy on a flyer? I don't see the idiots complaining about Crufts or adverts on TV containing dogs, so why this?

They're just moaning for moaning's sake!

...a picture of a cute cuddly puppy...

more to the point it will be a trainee police dog, dont know if it will be considered a officer or what ever but its part of OUR police force that they are complaining they dont like the look of.....oooo the irony.

The sad thing is that things like this make the BNP look more attractive to people. I'm not saying they are a good party, so much of what they preach is just... proper racism. But saying that a lot of it makes sense with regards to things like this.

Well if you are targeting sections of the community then it doesn't make sense to go out your way to offend them and given it is well known that dogs are thought to be unclean in Islamic culture generally it is perhaps a little bit thoughtless to use a dog on the advertising materials. It isn't as if the poster has anything to do with a dog unit, Rex is there because he looks cute, there is no more relevant reason for his presence than that.

Maybe it is just moaning for the sake of it and maybe it isn't, however it wouldn't have been hard not to use a puppy on the leaflet if targeting Muslims in particular with this campaign. While I find the idea of a dog being offensive a bit odd I'm prepared to accept that people believe different things to me.

surly when they say unclean, they mean unclean to eat. not that they can't look at them or anything else.

You might think that but no, it is taught by some to be just an unclean animal and that Muslims should perform purification after being touched by one. I'm not sure of the exact origins but I'd hazard a guess that in common with many religious dogmas (excuse the horrible punnage) it stemmed from a legitimate reason that has since been largely outmoded e.g. that in many Middle Eastern or African countries stray dogs might well have rabies and therefore it is not a good idea to get too close.
