EVGA offers 3DMark Vantage Advanced key to GTX 280 and 260 owners

Well considering the performance you get out of a 4870, you really would have to be either mad, or not very sensible to actually think the extra £220 is remotely worth it for what?

A slightly more performance? By the way the 4850s seem to be clocking, the 4870s should overclock really well and easily outpace a 280 since they're so close already.

I don't give a stuff kyle go blow that horn somewhere else. It's outright rude to call someone a **** because they've chosen a different piece of kit which you don't agree with.

Quite a few 280 owners on here that could take offense to that hence why people like that should just go away if they have nothing other to offer than flame.

The 280 bashing is getting old now and boring to read.

Just as the GX2 reviews showed 2560x1600 was so playable, the reviews for the 4870 512mb have shown the same. In reality from *my* own experience (I have 4 4870's here) the GTX280 is leagues ahead of anything Nvidia or ATI have or had at 2560x1600.

People can choose to spend their money depending on their needs, I agree not everyone makes the right choice and giving *advice* is one thing but to chastise someone for buying something when you have absolutely no idea what their circumstances are is ludicrous. I can afford to buy a GTX280 just by getting out of bed in the morning, I also *need* that much performance to drive a 30" screen ; does that make it stupid?

There's no denying the 4870 offers more performance per pound but when you can afford it, you also can't deny the 280 *is* the better card.

Iceman, I think you're absolutely bonkers - not just for buying the cards, but for going with tri-SLi, surely it's a right pain when it doesn't work?

However, it is your money, and you're free to spend it on what you like. :)

If you want to chuck some spare notes my way... ;)

I could call people who buy AMD Phenoms utter ****s but I don't it's downright rude and doesn't spark any sort of intelligent debate in any case.

ICEMAN give me a key :D

AFAIK/IIRC he's a pilot. I bet he didn't even blink when hitting the order button ;)

Also SLI > Crossfire in my experience, I had hardly touched upon SLI before my GX2 and it certainly changed my viewpoint on it. ATi do offer more flexibility with matching cards up though so all credit for that.

I'm not keeping Tri SLI, i have moved one of the cards to my other rig but I wanted to play for a bit. I just can't live without a decent sound card (I say decent loosely, it's an X-Fi..)

I must say, I'm hugely impressed with the 4870's and the 4850's, however at 2560x1600 they just don't cut the mustard, you get lots of stuttering and caching which reviews just don't get across, was the same with my quad SLI GX2's as well. I ended up running with just one, the microstutter I got with quad SLI was awful. Doesn't affect everyone but it certainly did for me :(

And yet it went on & on & on & on with the 2900, for weeks & weeks ...it's funny how when the tables turn all of a sudden it becomes boring ...

Before this last product release, almost every ATI thread was trashed by the same people every..single..time.

Swings & roundabouts.

Well personally I think Crossfire > SLi. :p

Only real complaint I had with my 3870X2 was it's AA performance, the other problems I had with it were 100% motherboard related.

I know it did. I was actually one of the ones who stuck by the 2900 and pointed out it's good points and bad points and explained (backing up my argument with links) why it did suffer at times

The unintelligent ones were the ones who came in and called everyone who bought one a **** or whatever. Most of these people were the ones who hadn't even had first hand experience with the hardware in question and simply weren't willing to give it a chance much like we see here.

I find it hilarious a select few on here completely turn tables at the flick of a hat but it happens everytime on here.

PRO NVIDIA > PRO ATI > PRO NVIDIA

Same old. Guess it's just the nature of the beast.

I run Crossfire whilst my wife's PC is on SLI and they both have their share of problems. Having said that, I'd never go back to a single GPU setup now, I like the dual card configs too much.

Crossfire does give you more flexibility though, there is no doubt about that.
