Or if any one knows some one that is.

Was out and about before and I seen a deaf man signing to himself, like he was talking to himself.

So here is the question, are deaf / dumb people able to speak to themselves in their head? Like say to themselves, I know Ill do this first instead of doing that, if they have never heard anything or have never been able to speak.

Possibly a silly question but I canny get my head around it.

why do deaf and dumb have to go together?

if grandmother is deaf, does this mean she's dumb?

I can't really say - there's no speech involved and essentially no hearing - or is there? Perhaps when they lose the ability to hear, they also lose the ability to 'speak within the mind' - even if they have the capacity to do it, the process of becoming unable to hear the real world may render them incapable?

Interesting thought though.

Maybe their internal commentary runs in sign language. If you grew up with a different language, you'd think in that language - this probably isn't any different. Only instead of imagined sounds, it's imagined hand positions.

I knew a deaf person who could speak a little... and sign language wasn't needed, just lip reading. My mum could have a conversation with her etc..

You can feel yourself talking in your throat, can you not?

Good questions. If they were born deaf, they don't know what speaking sounds like and they don't know what words sound like. So how do they think to themselves? Intriguing!!!

Would most liley be thinkign i nsigns rather than words, as the signs are a direct replacemnt for the spoken word. Really good question though, one I have though about before.
