*****The Official PS3 2.40 Firmware Discussion Thread*****

Ive heard that you can't turn down in game music and run your own music playlist from *** XMB, apparently comes up and 'can't play'.

Seems like you can access the XMB and invite friends, and.... that's it..... sigh

Hmm, I'm under the impression its down to the game developers to decide how the XMB works or whether it works within game? Could it not be an easily added feature by a developer? Or am i way off the mark, and I should go sit in the corner

That's coming in a further update. At the moment it's not able to do it.
This is according to the official Sony blog.

Not having custom soundtracks working unless the game is patched for it simply sucks to hell and back. Unacceptable to hype this firmware up for months and months only to do a u-turn and say it's not available unless the developer patches it up.
Blame MS as they're the ones stopping it with a silly patent.

Yay! I'm level 2 now! Woohoo, what do i get? O...nothing :(

:p

Damn, i seem to be whoring already...

Not Microsoft's fault for thinking of it back at the turn of the millenium.
If it's anyone's fault it's the patent office for granting it, but there are so many ways around it that blaming a company for thinking of it first does sound a little... silly?

Aaargh it's so useless right now! I really still can't invite friends properly into any of my online games!

I was waiting for three things:

1. Custom soundtracks
2. Friends invitational drop-in drop-out
3. Achievements/Trophies

And all three are still incredibly gimped or practically non-existent; trophies aren't retroactive and thus completely irrelevant for general gaming prowess - only individual ones - and all three still has to be programmed individually into games! Instead of a sweeping 'on top of' interface we simply get a 'oh you can do this now' shoutout to PS3 developers from Sony, and a very empty interface for gamers. I know it's the first day, but nothing has changed with existing games, and it isn't guaranteed to be added in every PS3 game yet to be released.

It's the biggest letdown I've felt in a very long time. One step forward isn't enough, it needs to be ten. Sony should have just gone the full distance, delayed this thing for longer and ensure that all 3 are fully implemented and fully retroactive.

If they can't - then that's a screwup and a result of Sony simply ignoring the 360's strengths and wrongly believing they weren't important changes at the time. This a missed opportunity of tremendous proportions. It should have been done at PS3's launch, but now it's too late it seems, and they can only throw so much into an already running engine, with hundreds of games out the door.

Developers better support the new changes fully - by that I mean every PS3 game released after July will have custom soundtracks, drop-in-out friends, and complete trophies & achievements system. It stinks that it's only for select games at their developers' whim, instead of an overarching part-of-the-ps3 solution. Stinks.

dont see how sony can go in and re-code 3rd party games
you know achievements for 360 are built into the code they dont just work cause ms said so right?

The custom soundtracks issue has been discussed already - Sony aren't able to create a system that overrides any games current soundtrack as it would infringe upon microsofts patent. What they CAN do is create a programme that devs can include in their games that will allow music to be played over their own soundtrack, which has been implemeneted in pixel junk monsters and i imagine all games coming out in the not too distant future.

Cross game invites and voice chat will be implemented in the future.

The 2.4 devkit had been available to developers for some time, games such as burnout paradise already have finished patches adding trophies and custom music that are going through compulsory testing by Sony before they can be released.

2.4s primary workload was getting the XMB to work in-game, the next step is to add functionality to it. I've said all this a couple of times before today and plenty of people have posted information that tells you this.

Exactly. Those features were implemented in the 360 from the start so Developers knew they would need to add it to their games.

Sony have just laid down the firmware to make it possible.

Didn't sony always say the ability to add ingame soundtracks was available to the devs anyway??
As for the update, it is quite major, it wasn't a case of 'add it so the PS button brings up the XMB'. Since the PS3 was launched they have had to significantly reduce the memory footprint off both the XMB and the op system. They now have it so it is able to run without infringing on gaming.
Sure people will say 'that's because the 360 has 512MB ram and the PS3 only has 256MB ram' which is a lie, but they will say it. Or they will say it is because it was a poor design from the start, well maybe that is true, but they have rectified it.
Sony have released a shedload of updates to the system since it was released, all of them are what the users have been wanting. I don't mind if they take steps to get it working correctly as they go. This is just one step.
Again i am going to throw it up there, but these updates are free. You bought the system as it was, you where happy with that spec when you bought it, don't moan when they add features, but maybe not the one you wanted just yet.

My only gripe with the trophies is that they don't update in realtime like the xbox ones do.

You have to go and look at the trophy list after you exit a game and then it synchronizes...

Does it not give you a dudump and a notification when you get one?? They said in the faq that it would.

you can do this in game too:)

it does tell you when you get one but it doesnt automatically update your list online. quick press of the PS button and opening the trophy collection will sync it.
