Aaargh it's so useless right now! I really still can't invite friends properly into any of my online games!
I was waiting for three things:
1. Custom soundtracks
2. Friends invitational drop-in drop-out
3. Achievements/Trophies
And all three are still incredibly gimped or practically non-existent; trophies aren't retroactive and thus completely irrelevant for general gaming prowess - only individual ones - and all three still has to be programmed individually into games! Instead of a sweeping 'on top of' interface we simply get a 'oh you can do this now' shoutout to PS3 developers from Sony, and a very empty interface for gamers. I know it's the first day, but nothing has changed with existing games, and it isn't guaranteed to be added in every PS3 game yet to be released.
It's the biggest letdown I've felt in a very long time. One step forward isn't enough, it needs to be ten. Sony should have just gone the full distance, delayed this thing for longer and ensure that all 3 are fully implemented and fully retroactive.
If they can't - then that's a screwup and a result of Sony simply ignoring the 360's strengths and wrongly believing they weren't important changes at the time. This a missed opportunity of tremendous proportions. It should have been done at PS3's launch, but now it's too late it seems, and they can only throw so much into an already running engine, with hundreds of games out the door.
Developers better support the new changes fully - by that I mean every PS3 game released after July will have custom soundtracks, drop-in-out friends, and complete trophies & achievements system. It stinks that it's only for select games at their developers' whim, instead of an overarching part-of-the-ps3 solution. Stinks.
