I wouldn't want to get any of this and find it doesnt work together, so if you could just tell me whether they will all work happily together that would be much appreciated

Sapphire 4850
Asus p5q
DVD drive SATA
Hard drives x2 IDE (already brought)
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-5400C5 (already bought)
e2180 (already brought)
Enermax Liberty 620W (already brought)

much appreciated

Which ASUS P5Q ? There are at least 6 versions...

IDE HDDs....... NOOOOOO.... throw them away, sell or leave for off-storage and get sata drives.

And you can surely consider cheaper mobo like GA P35DS3L for E2180 and it will be totally fine.

sorry yes i meant the basic version... thats the ip45 ... i'm afraid i dont have the funds atm to buy new hard drives, so they'l have to do... and i've chosen the p5q board becuase of the features, overclockerability and future proof-ness

IDE HDDs and pc5400 RAM? :s

I probably wouldn't buy sapphire because of their reputation.

yeh i've already come up with what i want, i'm just checkign that they will work together.. yes fine questionign what i havnt got yet, but unless theres no major compatibility issues with existign stuff i cant do nething....

( i am talkign about pata drives when i say ide, just to make sure)...

i appreciate your concerns, and thankyou, but unless you can see any compatibility issues, then i shall go ahead and buy the mobo, g card and sata dvd drive

It is all compatible so if that is your budget and the parts you already have you aren't going to do all that much better. You might do well to follow the advice over the Sapphire card since you haven't bought yet but it is up to you.

"Future-proofnessss" in what way ? the new CPUs that come up in few months this year and different socket so you will have to get new mobo, and for the current socket there isnt anything new coming out anymore. You dont have crossfire support either.

Make sure you got the dual IDE cable for your HDDs since there is only 1 slot on the mobo.

And you don't need any features, cheaper mobos got just enough for you and they will do just as well for E2180 ;).

Anyways,
goodluck

sorry how do you mean all that much better?.. as in with those existign things, i wont be able to find a better option, or that this upgrade wont do much for me?...

(i'm also doing this upgrade becuase my existing mobo is pants, and only runs 1 stick of the ram, and only clocks the e2180 to 2.3)

yeah i just meant future proofness in fsb rating.... ok for the extra 6 quid i've decided to strech to the pro.. just for the xfire slot.. dont want to be regretting anything..

What I mean is that due to the parts you already have you aren't going to get many parts that are much more suitable or better for what you want than the ones you have selected. I don't know what you are going from so I can't say definitively it will be an improvement but given what you've hinted about your motherboard I can't imagine it will be much worse.

ahh ok, what i hoped... thanks very much..

yeh my exisitng setup is

asrock dual crappy hybrid thing
x1950 agp
2gb 667, only just running at 300
e2180 @ 2.3

You seem hellbent on getting the Sapphire 4850 even though you haven't bought it yet, are limited on funds and have been warned about their reputation by Ben M (I have no idea what their reputation is like personally). Why not get the Powercolor 4850 and save yourself nearly 20 quid!
If you want the ability to upgrade to Crossfire get a X38/X48 MB, otherwise I would save the £'s, put it with the rest saved on getting the Powercolor 4850 and get a SATA hard drive for your OS, apps, etc (maybe a Seagate or WD 320GB or even a Samsung F1 500GB) and use your IDE drives for storage and backup. If you can't stretch to getting the hard drive this minute, then save the money and get one ASAP.

hmm the hard drive is deffinately somethign to think about.. and saphhire.. i've rma'd with them b4 and found them good.. but tbh, can anyone name a truely decent manufacturer with ati, who hasnt had people complainign about them?... i'd think about powercolor , but i dont knwo about their warranty and reputation.... there was a thread on this a few weeks ago and we concluded no manufacutrer from ati was good... nothign liek bfg or evga

There is no such thing as a future proof PC. You buy for today with the scope that it will perform for a few years coming. This is my policy else you're constantly upgrading for little gain.

yes kinda what i meant.. i dotn by any means expect to upragde this (majorly, i may for instance get a sata H-drive) in the next 2 years...
