Nvidia Shares Drop 24% This Evening!!

Ouch that has got to have hurt the big shareholder bosses at the top of the company.

Unless of course they sold their shares as soon as they saw the 4850 :p

It may have something to do with its recent declarations, described in Inquirer-lay-English here? Bear in mind that the second linked article is published by The Inquirer, so take their analysis and comment with a suitable pinch (kg?) of salt, but such declarations can never be good for share value. I'm fairly sure they'll bounce back at some point in the future, but the short term isn't looking so great. It's interesting to see that the re-aligned "focus more on the mainstream than high-end" strategy that ATI/AMD are going for is paying off, at least at the moment.

nVidia forgot its own hispory and how it beat 3dfx - basically 3dfx beat themselves up with arrogance, greed, lack of drivers and and crap attitude to their customer - and then betting the bank on brand loyalty over being the better package.

I really hope they recover and fast - we need competion in this market.

I reckon they will survive, ATI took a kicking and came back. I expect the next round will go to Nvidia again and then hopefully ATI again and round and round we go.

They are not exactly on the ropes, they currently still have the fastest single card solution available.

When ATI hit the skids, their new products were not a par on the nvidia ones at the time. Its swings and roundabouts.

ROFL we are talking about NV here people, they are massive, they are going nowhere, get real. I'm pleased ATI have made such a great come back, hell im getting an 4870 I'm so impressed with them.

As above, the drop in shares will no doubt hurt shareholders but as a company it's hardly doomsday. It's great to see ATI finally sorting their act out and if AMD could follow suit we could be in for some interesting times but they have a long, long way to catch up with Intel and NVidia yet.

As I recall AMD took a much larger hit than this a while back, they're still alive and kicking nVidia in the backside. Regardless, it's good to see some competition.

COME ON MY SON JIM!

thats bloody fantastic news, nvidias fairys and bloody god knows what they are on nvidias box's just got whipped by ruby :D :p

Not really, management had more to do with it than anything, most of the 3dfx products were stopgap products as the goal was to deliver rampage but management kept shifting resources away from that project, rampage was meant to be the successor to voodoo 2 but with the delays due to resources being diverted its design had to be updated to keep the tech current and that delayed it even moreso. Far as i remember everything that came after voodoo 2 were basically filler products.

Thers a big retrospective on this on a site somewhere remember reading it a while back. Basically it boiled down to poor management and overspending.

if the worse comes to worse they'll become a buy-out target similar to amd/ati, which would hopefully lead to a change in direction and some fresh ideas and innovation instead of just being as fast possible and sli'ing multiple gpus (which just isn't worth it tbh)

The competition is FANTASTIC.

We have cards that perform so well, for what's quite a cheap price in comparison. Long may it continue.

nVidia aren't going anywhere, nor would I want them to :) They've given us excellent products in the past 3 generations and they've had the market pretty much all to themselves thanks to the superb 8800 range.

They just happen to have been out-maneuvered by ATi this time, which is fantastic for competition. Hopefully, nVidia will respond to this kick up the back-side with better products for thenext generation :)

The company said it now expects revenue between $875 million to $950 million.

You don't earn that kind of revenue by being rubbish.

Don't think i'd call the Voodoo 5 6000 a filler product as such, apart from its size it was an impressive card in its own right, colour wise (in UT) one of the best and richest looking cards i've ever seen.

Nvidia are far from 'dead', shame really because i hate some of the things they do, i've not spent my own money on an nvidia product for a long while now.

Doesn't this always happen when one company releases a better/superior product? We've seen this happen with Nvidia and Ati a few times now and same with AMD and Intel.

Its just like the sega/nintendo battles of old, untill sega realised it would be far better off just making games for other systems :D

However it must be said RIP dreamcast..... cut down before it had a chance to shine :(

Yes it does, and it's pointless for people to be saying that these are huge problems for Nvidia. The 4800 cards are fantastic, but not more so than Nvidia still earning a lot of money by selling frankly crappy cards(8500/8600 etc) to OEMs, that's where a lot of the money comes from along with notebook chips.
