Huh!? Speeding has nothing to do with fuel consumption. Speed and fuel consuption are not related. Heavy acceleration and braking makes your car burn more, you can accelerate up to 57mph quite smoothly in a 30 zone and still not burn much petrol

The economy is slowing, expected taxes to be collected have fallen. A desperate Government will do anything to try and avoid cut backs in services. As usual the motorist will be fleeced to try and reduce shortfalls.

No, the car on its roof on my road last week had nothing to do with speeding. The accident definitely still would have happened if he was doing 30mph like the speed limit said he should have been doing.

No reason to be tearing around in my 30 zone thanks. It just makes being a pedestrian and pulling out of side roads hazardous.

Police should flash people doing 40 past a primary school, but not doing 32mph in a 30 when there is a 60sign a few metres ahead, thats just being sly.

Its ok, if you don't see the 90º bend coming up due to watching your speedo constatnly, career off the road, up the pavement, and mame a little girl, you'll be ok because you weren't breaking the speed limit!

I rarely drive near speed cameras. I drive by the rules of 30=30, 40=40, 50=50, NSL=whatever i feel is safest. so far I have a clean license and I have had a couple of minor mishaps unrelated to speed so far.

Last night I had to pass some speed cameras and although I wasn't speeding I noticed Iwas checking my speedo and began to drift a little on the road. It's not that I can't drive properly, but I was always taught to read the road ahead, way ahead (bike thing). So when I take my eyes off the horizon I began to wander off course a bit. nothing dangerous but enough to distract me even further.

It doesn't really bother me all that much becasue I just don't get caught, and if I do I'll deserve it.

That's just it though, it doesn't. The huge, massive increase in the number of fines issued for speeding has done nothing for road safety at all. The rate of improvement in statistics has actually slowed year on year...

I drove into London yesterday and the amount of signs, road markings, traffic, speed cameras and congestion signs that you have to be aware of along with your in car duties (indicating, sat nav, radio, air con, manoeuvres etc) was just mad. I can see why people crash, they are paying too much attention on hitting the speed limit dead on to avoid a ticket and avoid someone going into the back of them.

Oh I know this, but on paper, and in terms of cash-flow for the government, it "gets results".

An illustration of this would be to drive at 90mph constant and 60mph constant, both in 5th gear whilst observing the on board computer "mpg meter".

On another note where has this urban myth come from that 56/7mph is the most economical speed?

There were figures on the news the other day which claimed that you use up to 25% more fuel driving at 80mph than you do at 60mph. Sounds a bit high but the logic is there that higher speed=higher revs=more fuel burned.

As for the 56mph figure, I believe it came from the old manufacturer's fuel economy figures where 56mph=90km/h and was always the most economical figure. People then took it as 56mph being the most economical speed to drive at.

Higher revs has little to do with it. The drag at 80 is significantly higher than it is at 60. It's a square rule if memory serves, double the speed and you quadruple the drag etc.

Signs, road markings and traffic are fairly vital parts of the motoring experience. Of course you have to be aware of them. It's not overly difficult.

I've seen quite a lot of references that say removal of white lines, signs and lights can increase traffic safety because people are more aware of what’s going on, and don't switch off in their lanes.
