Like Dice Wars or Defender of the Crown, can anyone recommend me one please?

My shortlist so far is Europa Universalis 3 and Hearts of Iron 2 (not certain these are those types of game, but look it from screenies). These worth checking out?

They look very complicated which worries me a bit, maybe a simpler one about?

Cheers for any recommendations.

Only thing I can suggest, if you can still find it - is Norm Kogers' The Operational Art of War.

Got into it ages ago through a game demo, its hex-based and not real time, but some of the maps can be HUUUGE!

There's a Game of the Year edition out somewhere, not sure if it can still be found. I've got both the original 1939-1955 campaign set and the 1955 - present day one.

Have you tried any of the Total War games? Medieval 2 Total War is a great game, and involves training lots of troops and sending them off on the campaign map to conquer enemy cities. Also have a look at Conquest Of The Aegean or Highway To The Reich, both by Panther Games.

Hearts of Iron 2 is a real heavy game, but if you're into that, then it's very rewarding once you get over the initial learning curve... there is a lot of strategic parts to the game other than just moving troops (such as which technologies & doctrines to research, large scale diplomacy including keeping the people at home happy, and even developing your industries)

Another worth considering in the same arean is Strategic Command (1&2)

HOI2 is fantastic :)

I needed to apply a workaround so the game wouldn't end because i'm a slow player who likes to take over the world.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Think I'll give Hearts of Iron 2 a go.

Hah, yeah this sounds like what I like, to build up a million troops then roll over everyone till the whole map is mine. Like the idea of doctrines too.

Was worried about the learning curve as plan to download it (legally from gamersgate) and dont want a heavy manual. Hope the tutorial is good.

The tutorial introducees the interface, and the manual is fairly heavy, but there are a lot of FAQ's out there that will help with the learnign curve too.

you know, i never tried that... played the original Steel Panthers a lot back in uni days... but once Combat Mission hit the shelves, i lost a lot of interest in hex games... but this genre is a long way form the original thread of "troop movements", which I think was aimed more at the strategical than tactical.

I really enjoy both EU3 and HOI2, EU3 though I say is not complete unless you get the In Nomine expansion but that also requires Napolean's Ambition. As for Hearts Of Iron 2 while that has the longest learning curve I have ever seen it is one of the most rewarding games I have played on. There should be demo's for both of them so try them out first.

That's interesting, as I'm playing the Doomsday version... what part of it don't you like? The espionage is the only part i don't really enjoy on Doomsday.

Did Combat Mission itself cause you to lose interest or was it just one game too many ?
You dont have to use hexes in CM,in fact I never have as it looks too unrealistic.

Yeah, Combat Mission was so good in my opinion that I lost a lot of interest in normal hex games. I think that the almost tabletop gaming feel of combat mission (1, 2 & 3) outclass most of the other games... however, there's currently no strategic interest in CM... I hope that CMC does appear, and doesn't become another vapourware.
If you facy a game of CM via email, then drop me a note... i prefer CM2 over the other 2, but happy to play any.

Yeh espionage mainly. Also I feel the tech gets too advanced :|

I really enjoy the doomsday version, but agree i could do without espionage... think i might look up the original game to see if I can find a cheap 2nd hand copy.

I echo your thoughts on CM,the worldwide community is only about 7k but the level of devotion is verging on the fanatic !
I havent commanded pixeltruppen in a pbem for some time but as you slapped my face with a virtual gauntlet I have no option but to accept,CMBB it is !
Cant send messages on this forum but you can get me on my trash hotmail account MJJ 1958 @ hotmail dot co dot uk (lose the spaces) can give you another address once we get going.

Another vote for HoI2 here. I like the way that the non-Armageddon version models the fact that you can't just steamroll a country, annex them and expect them to give full support and full industrial capacity. Often, placing a puppet government in charge is the best way to go. This is something lost in the total war games.

While people will recommend EU3, I would have to recommend EU2 as well. They are completely different games, not just a remake. EU2 tends to play more historically, while EU3 tends to be more free for all.
