Seriously guys, is it national "gang up on Yantorsen" day or something? You're all completely ignoring what he's saying and claiming he's dodging questions...

It's ok. There just a little narrow minded and blinded by there own arragance, atleast that's the impression I get. No ofence intended.

I said there's no logic in picking certain elements to believe, and ignoring others from the same religion.

That's like saying, 'well I believe in the 10 commandments, but only rules 1, 2, 4 and 7'.

not quite, it's more like saying I beleive in this book because of X, and not this book because of Y.

No, I would just like a straight answer to some straight questions.

Many of his replies are obtuse, "some people say" or a "common explanation", none of the replies actually tell us what he thinks.

if the quesiton was so straight, it would ask what do i think, if that's what you wanted.

Why not? This would be classed as spiritual growth. Not only that it would be the sensible thing to do when either your experiences or the evidence for believing in anything does not quite tally.

sounded more like you were just throwing out a question, i was simply giving an answer that could be given.

How odd, when somebody asks me a question a tend to tell them what I think rather than what could be said by somebody else.

If somebody asks if you would like a cup of tea do you reply thinking "what would Queen Elizabeth say" ;)

Why?, how?, it's all just the usual tactics that religious people use. 'We can't actually explain a whole lot of what we believe' (in a way that actually makes sense) so let's throw a million questions back so maybe our inconsistencies don't stand out quite so much.

It's all just nonsense, I'll gladly stand by that on my death bed.

Random chaos.

That's not an answer at all, it's simply another variation on "Just because" that happens to suit what you want to believe. It's identical in validity to "Because God said so", and equally as useful (or useless, depending on the context)

Yes, and usually when you're part of that discussion, it is your opinion/thoughts that people are looking for. Unless otherwise stated of course.

There's no point continuing really, it's the same merry go round that you will always get when you put a religious person against a non religious person.

Because it's a fundemental law of physics that can be proven empirically.

Why do you think is falls?

Look back at that statement, then compare it to what science is. Your definition is circular. We observe something that we can model, therefore our model predicts the observations, therefore it's fundamental...

Can you not see where that falls down?

And that's without the distinction between being able to predict what something will do and understanding why it does it (which is not the same as having the simplest model that could fit the data) that is a fundamental area of faith...

Hypothetical situation:

Let's say I claim to have received words from "God", with which I am told to record in some sort of structured way thus producing a document, much like the Bible. Will this then be regarded by believers as, I don't know... legitimate, and followed in similar ways as the Bible is?

I'm genuinely curious, does anyone have an answer?

And it will do fine for me until something comes along to make me have a strong belief one way or another.

Until then, random chaos fits the bill perfectly.
