Hi guys,
Need a new head unit.

Been looking at this:

812bab0d07a35876d539d2ff0c80e420.jpg

The Sony Mex-1GP, which has a handle little feature. The faceplate is a 1gig music store, awesome!

But the cheapest I can find it is... HALFORDS! For £139.99. Surely this can't be true!

Anyhoo. I'll be running two JBL 6x9s off a 250w amp to begin with. Then add new door speakers and a sub (nothing massive) to my lil' red escort (she's called moira).

Anyone know of anything similiar to this with bluetooth in the same price band? Can someone suggest some other decent (Cheaper!) Head Units?

Cheers,
Ant

Pioneer or Kenwood is the only two I would consider at that budget. Always thought the sony headunits look cheap and tacky.

No cd player either, that would annoy me.

It does have a cd player :)

And the HU is a little old now. It used to be one sale on t'internet for £299.

Mon deu, tis a bargain!

It's not that they look cheap and tacky (although they REALLY do!), it's that sony headunits are crap.

looks quite nice as sony HU's go,

1GB Music store sounds pants though, not even 2 cds so doesent seem worth the hastle

I'm a bit confused by this Sony HUs are pap thing. Could someone explain WHY they're not good? This used to be a very expensive Head Unit :) It has two sets of pre-outs, 4x52w channels, and there's nothing cheap and tacky about its appearance :)

It's like two hundred 5mb songs. That's plenty. You can also seperate them into folders to create playlists.

I was really quite taken with this HU. And whilst everyone seems to have unremittingly sladed it, Sone aside, noones really explained why...

Sorry, just a bit confused.

Cheers for your opinions,

Using Sony car audio is like substituting your 1080P LCD TV for a can of spam and expecting good picture quality.

I've found the following to be true with Sony car audio:

Poor audio reproduction

Limited sound adjustment settings

Bad build qulity

Main issue is by spending the same money with another company you can do better, so why would you buy the sony?

Ok cheers fella. Have you owned/installed quite a few Sony HUs then?

This is the unit : http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4736.html

Care to suggest a HU with similiar functionality around £140?

I'm not an audiophile. And I drive a ford escort. The car is not sound proofed and configured for maximum fidelity. To a degree, I was under the impression that in the league of sub £200 head units, the quality of sound isn't going to differ massively; a handful of black sheep aside.

But if that's a misconception I'd love to be cleared of it :D

1 gig of flash media is worth about £3 so more than thinking 'This is awesome' we should really be thinking 'What excuse do manufacturers have for NOT including this sort of thing as standard'.

I like some of the Pioneer models as I'm looking for an upgrade to my Sony which suits the e46 dash but as I found out recently, does not have a remote connection so my steering wheel can' control volume/tracks etc until I upgrade.

I find the sound quality very good from the Sony and I'm on stock speakers, the bass is tight and the treble details are there too, I'm not a hardcore audiophile but I do like my sound quality so do have good audio kit for home and computer and am able to tell between bad sound quality and good on the whole.

Are the Pioneers that much better for SQ? I like the look of this unit:

It should fit flush with the dash and has red lit lighting so would suit the e46 nicely.
Worth the upgrade? could probably sell my Sony for £40~

Definately worth the upgrade, a mate has one of those, and it still sounds superb, even compared to the higher-end pioneer stuff.

I've just bought the DEH-P7000UB for my car and have to say its really good. Comes with all the stuff for ipod connection and gives you full control of the ipod on the headunit with track names etc etc. More importantly it works quickly and effectively with the ipod unlike pioneers of old. Bit more expensive than the one above but I reckon worth it.

Nice Unit!

So what's the opinions on alpine?

Seen the Alpine CDE-9880R for £130. And the bigger brother CDA-9884R for £180. What's so special about the 9884 to make it £50 more?

Decent Units then? Or should I really just stick to pioneer?

I've got the P700BT and cant comment on the ipod but everything else it does flawlessly, I have just ordered a 60gb hd for it to use which will sit under my passenger seat, and it has numerous colours too fit in with any dash. mrk pop round have a play if you're interested in one of the pioneers.

No Alpine are up there at the top with pioneer also mate :)

not sure why one unit comands the £50 premium tho.
