British Grand-Prix, back to Donington!

Donington%202003.gif

This was proposed years ago when Donington wanted the F1 awhile back, of course it wasnt developed then.

I heard this on the news earlier, great news if you ask me! Its within 20 mins on a good day! I heard millions of pounds will be spent to make it accommodate the race and its about time too! A great track with next to no seating area, all positive for me :) Bring on 2010!

It is going to take a lot of work to bring it upto the standard of even silverstone. I think its a good thing tho :)

Do you honestly think any of the point you have just made will remain when the track gets redeveloped?

All those calling ot 'Brands Hatch!'

Pffft. Get real. BH don't want the GP after what they were told they would have to do to get it.

Agreed. But somehow Doningtons owners seem to think completely changing everything good about the track is somehow a good idea?

I cant see this as anything more than Bernie throwing his toys out of his pram. Just because Silverstone wont bend over to every demand he has the spiteful little tart goes and does this. Silverstone have made a lot of changes and its easily the best place to have the F1 in Britain. I cant see this deal doing much good for Donington either, but that is just cynicism.

I agree, its Bernie shaking things up a bit. But the blame isnt so much with the BRDC, they know what they need to do. The trouble is that they have no money, and no way to get it. All the recent F1 track developments (Malaysia, Bahrain, Valencia, Singapore, Abu Dahbi, India) have had substatial state investment, but our government just dont want to know. As many articles about this have stated, it would take an investment of less than 1% of what the government have dedicated to the 2012 Olympics to get Silverstone up to the standards it wants.

I still stand by my feeling it will never get to Donington within 2 years, its just not possible.

I think the Governemnt should loan, or even just underwrite/guarantee a loan from a third party for the BRDC to complete the necessary improvements to Silverstone.

If Central Government can bail out public limited companies with loans for billions, I'm sure the DCMS could assist the BRDC to acquire the necessary finance for a short period of time.

As Damon Hill said, the BRDC can't obtain a loan for improvements until the Grand Prix contract is signed. Bernie won't give them the Grand Prix contract until the finance in is place for the improvements. It's a vicious circle unfortunately.

Any sport that can afford to pay a person 1 million a race should not get any government money.

Shouldnt the government WANT to attract sport with that sort of money?

Why. So the people who get that money can live overseas and make no contribution. If the sport has that much money floating around it does not need government money.

You seem very ignorant of the way Formula 1 works - yes, some aspects of F1 have money but these are not the aspects responsible for building or maintaining tracks.

So what that drivers are paid 1 million a race?

Tracks don't get much help which is why many of the best have state/goverment backing.
If our government would invest into one race track. The surrounding area will thrive, due to more spectatours. Hotels, restrants etc will cash in on this.

If I am ignorant then educate me. Britain has a Grand Prix guaranteed now the deal with Donnington is done. Why should the government give money to Silverstone? Why should F1 be treated different to any other commercial sport. Liverpool are looking to build a new football stadium, should the government contribute there as well.

we should have one brilliant stadium sponsored by the goverment, just as we should have one awesome race track and one awesome athletics circuit and one of pretty much every other major event/sport.

These places attract huge amounts of revenue for the uk and the goverment should insure we have the best facilities in the world to secure such things and it's not just about f1, the tracks are used for more than that.

because to make awesome places which are world class are general out of the price range of private companys. Thankfully we got the Olympics hopefully these facilities will be kept up together after the event.

We should have things to make this nation be proud and great again. that means spending money on such things.

I don't see the problem. Donnington seem to have found the money in the private sector to host the British Grand Prix. Why should the government subsidise Silverstone when Donnington can host the GP without government subsidies.
