I need a 6 pin to 8 pin pci express adaptor for my 9800gx2, will this work?

Have a look for an Enermax EMC008 cable, use the 2 pin part of the plug and connect it to the black wires on a molex.

Bear in mind if you get a 6pin to 8pin this will fail if the card actually needs the extra power the 8pin provides.

pcie slot 75w, each 6pin 75w, 8pin 150w
 
Good example, there is no extra load capacity. Just two extra commons which merely allows the use of the higher rated 8 pin connector. The three (yellow) 12v conductors and 6 pin connector for that matter can supply a hell of a lot more than 75w.

Not quite, its 'rated' at 150w by Pci-sig in this application. A 6 pin PCI-e can deliver the same, its just not rated beyond '75W' in this application.

Few shops in america sell the cables if you're prepared to wait a week. The adapter works out about 7 quid delivered which isn't too bad. Alternatively you can do what I do and just upgrade the PSU since there are going to be more and more cards that require 8 pin and now I have four of them :D

I got the card second hand and it didn't include one. Well it was actually supposed to but the guy forgot to put it in the package. He kindly offered to pay for a replacement but the real problem is actually finding one it seems...

Thanks Tom, thats the website I was looking at, looks like i either have to wait for it to come from the states or just say 'screw it' and get a new PSU.
