Ive got a hd tv that supports 720p & satellite dish connected to nothing.

I've heard of freesat hd supporting bbc/itv but cant find much info on it.
Is it just a case of buying a box, plug your satellite dish into it & bingo?

Ahh ta.

The best box I can find £149 only upscales to 1080i or 720p, does that mean the source is <720p ?
What I mean to ask is are the channels broadcast to at least 720p, which I think is the minimum for hd.

Currently all HD in the UK is broadcast at 1080i. The actual resolution being 1920x1088 or 1440x1088.

Ahh I was confused about the upscaling bit if it claims to be hd.

My tv can do 1080i, phew :)

So 1080i is 1920x1080 interlaced or on a tv with 1368x768 pixels it kinda squeezes it down.

i have a 720p sharp aquos which supports 1080i and V+
now surely its better using the panels native resolution than trying to squeeze a 1080 line interlaced image in to 720 lines. try doing that with your LCD monitor it looks kack
1080i is only really worth using if you have a 1080p tv
and use 1080i for fine detail slow moving still images and 1080p for movies sports games :)

it really bakes my noodle when people say wow my 720p tv supports 1080i leet roxor

720p: 1,280x720 pixel resolution. High-definition picture that is displayed progressively. Each line is displayed on the screen simultaneously, therefore it is smoother than an interlaced picture.

1080i: 1,920x1,080 pixel resolution. High-definition picture that is displayed interlaced. Each odd line of the picture is displayed, followed by each even line, and the resulting image is not as smooth as a progressive feed. 1080i is therefore a more detailed picture suited to documentaries and wildlife footage, but less suitable for action-oriented material such as sports and movies.

1080p: 1,920x1,080 pixel resolution. High-definition picture that is displayed progressively. Each line is displayed on the screen simultaneously, therefore it is smoother than an interlaced picture. This is the ultimate high-definition standard -- the most detailed picture, displayed progressively.

Perhaps the use 1080i so people with 1080p tv's get a good deal?

I also use my tv as a pc monitor at 1:1 pixel 1360x768.
At 1080i I get much more available desktop but the image quality is very poor, though films at 1080i look ok.
