Is this for real? I expected it to come down a good £50 from launch within a couple of weeks but they're going for £300 odd....Down from over £450...

Why is this, may I ask?

Is it purely due to the release of the 4870 or something else, surely something strange is going on, no?

Not every card has come down this much

My word, just read the main price cut thread...this sort of thing hasn't happened for YEARS!!!

Some much needed bloody competition at last....now AMD just need a decent CPU to compete with intel, lol....that would be going too far but this is mental...

If only my physical friends were geeks this would be an interesting topic of discussion and excitiment :p:)

I think a lot of it is the retailers ripping off the customers to begin with as well as nvidia.

Once there was another choice they drop the prices down.

That prolly true as well....to be able to slice off over a £100 in a matter of days just goes to show what money grabbing SOBs these companies are :)

Still, nice for a consumers obviously at the mo at least.

Give it 3-4 more weeks nad the prices will drop to:
GTX280 - ~280
4870 - ~170
4850 - ~100

And still nvidia gonna get its ass delivered, I'm glad ATI taught them some lesson again.
Now let's hope for AMD to do the same to Intel and we'll have many happy customers :).

I don't think they will drop much more due to the cost of making the chips though? At least until they drop the die size.

The REAL bargains are going to be on places like the MM soon. Lets face it seeing as you can now get a brand new 4850 for 100quid the 2nd hand price of something like a 8800GTX is going to be very low now.

I bought a 8800GT for 150quid several months back ( 5maybe i cant remember ) so ill be keeping this in my second sytem as its simply not worth selling on. For my main rig ill wait until the 4870 prices come down a little more, and they will, as retailers desparately try to shift stock when they dual cards come out. I can already find them locally for £150 brand new so i think they have a little way yet to come down. Even at £150 its a super price though!

For the consumer its never been better!

You could always sell to some noob on the bay.

wished i did and i would have waited a week and got my HIS 4870 for £50 cheaper than i paid for it on launch day

You must have realised though that buying anything on launch day is always going to be allot more expansive than waiting a few months ...

Not always. Take last year when they lauched the 8800 GT I paid £155+ delivery a few minutes after launch. This price increased to £180+ very quickly and stayed there for some time.

However now we have competition things have changed a wee bit.

Nvidia gave a good price drop, and the manufacturers (Asus, Leadtek, BFG, XFX etc) also gave price drops to get sales up.

Thats more short supply than anything else - nVidia wanted to bring out the G92 8800GTS and suppliers artificially added the price increase as they knew they would be in demand - just normal economics...

ps3ud0
