Sony’s Director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel has said that PlayStation Home’s upcoming open beta is still on schedule for release this fall, assuring consumers that its release will offer a “fully robust service.”

“The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall,” said Lempel, during an interview with Next-Gen.biz

Despite numerous delays, Lempel was keen to point out that the open beta would be worth the wait, offering consumers a “fair” representation of the forthcoming online social networking platform.

Speaking in direct reference to Sony’s Susan Panico, who suggested that Home’s “rollout will be similar to Gmail,” and thus function as an "open, working beta,” Lempel asserted that Home’s public form would not merely function as a “0.5 release.”

“If you think about Gmail and Susan’s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you’d expect, but was in beta just to say that there’s more to come and maybe it’s not fully polished,” he said.

“The reason we’ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

Elsewhere, he also addressed the subject of Sony’s planned movie download service for PSN, though did not divulge any specific details in regards to a release date or pricing.

“I don’t have any more specifics right now, but like Kaz [Hirai] said, it will go live [in the US] this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they’re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more,” he offered.

Yay!

So we're only getting the beta at the end of the year?! Tbh i couldn't really give a toss about it anymore, sick of the constant delays.

They have been saying the beta will be out this fall for quite some time now. They have simply come out and said it's still on track. So actually it's not been delayed this time! haha.

Last i heard the beta was due out this spring/summer but obviously that got delayed, lets just hope they stick to this one(wouldn't surprise me if they didn't though)

It's a hefty project, they have probably bitten off more than they can chew, Sony haven't done anything like this before and Id imagine they have ran into countless problems, its pretty obvious the estimated release date wasn't going to be.

Bit of a shame, especially since it was all Advertised to give us the impression that it's either "Being shipped with PS3" or "It's out as immanently for Download"

They have always said it was going to be an ongoing beta, just like the gmail comparison mentioned, fully fuctional but more features to be added over time.

Please can someone just remind me as I've only ever participated in one beta and that was for a game on the PC anyway (Warrock... what was I thinking??), but does open beta mean that you don't have to sign up a few weeks before it's released in order to play it? So basically meaning you can download the beta after it's been released and then start using it, rather than having to sign up beforehand?

Just curious :)

Wow. Thanks Sony. Fortunately I couldn't give a hoot about Home, but it's nice to know that all of those who have waited so patiently, so loyaly, are being given a product that still isn't complete.

Interestingly enough people complain when something is released early/'on time' with bugs, yet complain when it's pushed back so they can make it better.

i agree

Use sentences and punctuation. I think once you manage this people may start to take your posts seriously. Until then, I suspect most people ignore you because your posts are so short, lack clarity and stink of Mr Men (or someone doing a good-ish impression).
