as soon as I stop orthos the temps instantly returns to 45c from 55 core1, 48c core 2 or there abouts, also the fan instantly slows back down when stopping orthos.. The reason I ask you guys is cos someone said I have a poor seal between heatsink and cpu if temps drop instantly back to idel temps after stressing the cpu.
I always thought, if I had bad contact between heatsink and cpu, the temps would slowly drop.

Bad seal? Did you use Artic Epoxy as TIM? :p

Whomever said that to you is speaking rubish. Your temps are fine.

my opteron with the IHS on it used to load up to 55c and idle at around 35c.
as soon as i put it to load temps used to rocket up to 47c from 35c in like 2 seconds and then slowly climb up to thier peak at 55c over about 3 mins.
as soon as the stress tester was turned off temps instantly dropped by 10c in like 2 seconds down to 45c and then slowly drop back down to 36c in like 1 minute.

then i removed the ihs, max temp peaked at around 51c, and idle was 32c. now this time when i put the cpu to load temps instantly shot up by 4c but then slowly rised over a period of 4mins to 51c.
when the stress tester was turned off the cpu temps dropped by 5c instantly over 2 seconds and then slowly over 40 seconds or so went back to idle speeds.

testing done using opteron 146 single core and fixed cpu cooler fan speed.

if your cpu drops like 10c or so instantly than you probably got poor ihs contact or poor heatsink contact.

obviously there will be a certain amount of instant temp drop and rise due to the diode monitoring the temps being right on the core but any large variations are usually a good sign of poor contact somewhere.

with proper cooling and contact you shoudl see less jumpier temp movement, and slower rise to peak temps and faster drop to idle temps. (providing your fan is set to a fixed speed)

that sounds pretty normal to me, I think, especially if you have speedstep enabled.

Yeah I have speedstepping enabled, so when the cpu isnt working much, or as soon as I stop stress testing it knocks the cpu down to 2.4ghz from 3.6ghz and volts are knocked down to 1.16 - 1.17v from 1.210 - 1.220v.
