Is MGS4:Guns Of The Patriots for PS3 worth buying ??

I think you'd still enjoy it without having played the other games but not nearly as much so if I were you I would start with MGS1 and work through to 4 (maybe skipping 2 as it's not quite as good IMHO). The MGS database is really good but not a substitute for actually playing the other games.

Sorry but all the people who are saying you need to have played the other games are wrong! If you have not played the others just watch Metal Gear Retrospective on GT or even just a little read of the MGS4 Database (PSN free download). You do not need to have an in depth knolegdge of the story in order to apprichiate how good MGS4 is.

Yes, there will be some things you don't understand without knowing what went on before, but you will still be able to piece together the important parts and the MGS4 story is good in its own right. The game IS a lot better if you do know the story as there is a lot in the game that fans can relate to, but it's still an awesome game if you don't.

In short.... BUY IT NOW!

hold your horses there matey. the reason i said play the others first is not only because of the story, but the style of the game. there have been a few people who havent played the others and gone into mgs4 not knowing what to expect and been thoroughly driven up the wall by the long cutscenes. peopel who are expecting more gameplay than cut scenes will be disappointed. thats why i said spend pennies on mgs1 first.

but yeah sure, spend £40 if you like, because im 'wrong'.

No, under no circumstances should you buy the obvious frontrunner for game of the year, the major release of the year on the PS3 and the game everyone here is raving about.

I've never played a MGS game before, have no idea of the story from the others and I still think MGS4 is an excellent game. Ok I must admit some of the story goes over my head but the cutscenes are so good that I can't bring myself to skip them.

The gameplay is very good, and the choice of weapons/upgrades etc really adds to the game.

In short yes I would recommend the game, although if you haven't got/played it already I would say go for Uncharted first if your not an MGS fan.

I played some of MGS1 and all of MGS2 and can grasp whats going on. Never played snake eater but I'm thinking of buying a slimline ps2 and getting it.

Oh and yes it's worth buying for sure, best game Ive played in a long time. Only thing i would change is the amount of firepower you can get, i think the sneaking element has totally gone from it.

There is plenty of firepower but you can still play it in full stealth/sneak mode, personally I think it's good that they give you both options and adds a lot to replayability. I'm currently doing a run with no alerts or kills and it's a lot harder than the rather gung ho approach I took first time but still great fun :)

no i would say its not worth it
just a movie with some very limited gaming

How much is a movie on DVD these days? £20 for a film about 2 hours long. MGS4 is a film that's over twice as long as that, plus there's a bit of game in there too, for only around twice the price:p It's worth it in my opinion, even if it is more of a film than it is a game.

I would say no if you haven't played the previous ones. You will be saying "WTF?" too many times and you probably wouldn't enjoy the cutscenes that much because you don't know what's going on.

If you had played MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 then I would tell you differently.

Paranoid_Robot, you can download the past stories and understand it all from the PSN, or alternatively there is a thread over on the GAF.

Knowing just the story isnt totally ideal though, you'd still be missing out on character depth as well as previous titles references and jokes etc. & anyone that says its just a movie clearly hasnt played the previous titles enough to understand MGS. I found gameplay & cut-scenes to be one of the best this gen. (imo)

Can you download these on the net, just bought a PS3 mainly to play MGS4 and i just want to brush up on my knowledge. Played all of them so far, loved each, especially the end of the last one.
