Is MGS4:Guns Of The Patriots for PS3 worth buying ??

Teaches me for not fully reading the thread, MGS4 has only been out a couple of months max though so surely comparisons arent valid until the game hits saturation?

Yea MGS3 was silent, it just appeared on the shelf, it was better than 2 though which had doubled its sales figures, goes to show what marketing & hype can do.

I reckon MGS2 hurt sales of MGS3. The second was basically a gimme, people were ready to buy anything on the back of MGS1 (and the tanker section in the demo was also excellent).

But there were a lot of people who weren't happy with MGS2, a certain number of those would have to go down as lost MGS3 sales.

MGS3's sales figures are peculiar. The game scored 91 and 94 averages on both its releases according to metacritic so it's not like the game was slated by the reviewers, and it's not like there weren’t many PS2 owners around either to actually buy it. It was without doubt one of the strongest games in the series. It was either a case of the complete lack of marketing (I didn't even know the game was released for ages), or the complete shift in gameplay direction that he took with it putting most people off - no soliton radar etc. The story was easier to follow but some of the gameplay elements were probably too hardcore for the mass market (changing camo, actually having to be stealthy rather than just avoid the FOV cones, epic sniper bosses taking place over 3 stages for example)

@ OP. Give it a go but try to play the original games first as you'll appreciate some of the finer touches so much more. Though you may struggle picking up the originals for a decent amount at the moment, the MGS4 release has massively inflated the 2nd hand price of the original games particularly 1 and 3. :(

I am quite liking this game but sometimes I just feel extremely bored by it. I am only on Act 1, does it get any better than this, also are there many different environments? I really hate the whole middle east desert type setting in games now.

Yes it does get much better imo. Act 1 was a struggle for me too, like you say it's just boring and completely fails at the mood it's attempting to set.

Every act is an entirely different environmet. Try to avoid spoilers as the game takes you to some surprising places.

Cool that's good to know.

One of the things I am finding annoying is the fact that I really want to shoot some people. But I realise I am supposed to sneak everywhere :p

So far it just doesn't feel as good as MGS2, but its good to know that things get better after Act 1. How many Acts are there out of interest?

5, and each one is notably different to the last. Pretty much any gameplay video you've ever seen of MGS4 is likely to have been taken from early in the game.

And as for the sneaking, I don't think there was a part of the game where shooting wasn't a legitimate option, and more often than not I took it. I think it's on the harder difficulty settings that sneaking starts to become essential.
