I can't believe how much fun this game is! I never bothered to play it first time round (yes that is bad i know) as it looked like a mindless hack. But its actually got quite a lot of depth to it and reminds me very much of wow in regards to tuning and customising your char. I'm really looking forward to Diablo 3 now!

Nope still there, its a check box next to expansion character in the creation screen.
I'm not sure what version they let you download but maybe try installing the latest patch if it isn't already 1.12a.
Other than that, did you run the video test that accompanies the game? Ideally you want it to pick up that you have a direct3d-compatible card. Perhaps your monitor isn't keen on playing in 800x600 fullscreen mode either, in which case you could try running in windowed mode. To do that I think you go into the properties of your desktop shortcut and add -w onto the end of the text in the target field.
Anyone with any other ideas?
EDIT - Oh and for advice as a newbie starting out. My best is to recommend that you bookmark Blizzard's own D2 site since it is an absolute goldmine of information.

Hmm, not working on XP? Strange, I got got it running on two XP machines here.
I just hit Act 5 NM with my Skelemancer I started months ago, really tough with all the archers and not being arsed with Dim Vision.
Tempted to continue leveling my Fury 'zon as shes at level 21 (with 18 skills points spare!)
The best thing about D2 is, there's tonnes of different specs you can do, I bought D2 on release, and D2:LoD on release and even now there's loads of different specs I haven't tried. This is my first Necromancer ever, and I've only ever tried a Bow specced 'zon and a lance spec zon back before the big jab nerf many years ago.
A single class actually plays completely differently when you spec it another way, it basically means the game has quite a few more classes than just 7!

Why would you save skill points? You can't save them all up and then use them on the more advanced skills.
That's not really true, I've saved them because my spec works around 20 Charged Strike, 20 Lightening Fury and 20 Lightening Strike.
It means that when I hit 30 I can start pumping LS & LF with my saved points (1 into each at every level)

Just after I wrote that I realised that if you were maxing two skills of the same level then you could do it like that
Just got back from the shops where I managed to bag D2 and LOD for £5 and £3 respectively. I never played Diablo 2 and although I tried the demo I finally gave the demo some proper time last night and something clicked. So I'm going to give D2 a proper go over the next few weeks.

Only using the method mentioned. The level requirements of skills raise with the skill level. So level 1 frenzy requires character level 24, level 2 frenzy requires clevel 25 and so on. This stops you putting more than one point in per level.
Thats because they are all duped/hacked.
Duping is near impossible now on closed bnet, and you cant hack.
you can only hack on open bnet, where you have control over your Hex file. On closed bnet your hex file is stored remotely.

I dont think i have ever managed to complete a full set of decent armour yet. I managed the Beserker's stuff, and got a couple of items from the *something* Brethren, but thats it

Want to create a new character but unsure of what to go for, the last 3 have been Barbs but havent got very far with them due to lack of decent items and no-one to play with online.
May create a new Sorceress tonight if anyone wants a game, though tbh i have only completed the game once and that was with a Sorceress.

Like a lot of people i've just bought the game and expansion and am currently working through the single player game with a Paladin. Great game I have to say - kicking myself for not playing it years ago!
I'm still trying to work out the multiplayer side of things - are there rare items only available in multiplayer? I presume I cannot move my single player char to a multiplayer server?
