Students: Weekly food spend

me and my girlfriend alternate between weeks. always make sure you go to a big supermarket sainsburys etc. we've got smaller shops like co op much closer but its worth the extra walk to get the cheap stuff.

cheap unhealthy mince 50p for a meal for the both of us, compared to quality mince for around 2 pounds

Apparently it doesn't work like that and it only counts for 2 portions at the most per meal.

I typically use an onion, 5 carrots, two handfuls of brocoli, two handfuls of mushrooms and shed load of summer greens / spinach / cabbage.

If thats not 5 portions of veg then thats just silly. I tend to eat fairly large meals (possibly why I find my wasteline hard to defeat at times!).

When I go to college I'll be living off corn flakes, porridge, bread, cheese and rice, should be cheapo right? Oh dont forget the mustard I have that on everything.

It's to do with the human digestive system, it's why drinking two litres of orange juice doesn't give you any more vitamins than drinking 600ml will.

My current favourites:
Spaghetti Bolognese - Beef mince, and Tesco/ASDA's vegetarian pasta sauce.
Chile Con' Carne - Out of a jar with beef mince again.
Lamb, roasted with mint sauce in tin foil parcels.
Salmon, baked with lemon and some olive oil, in tin foil parcels.

Talking from Experience, do your best not to binge on food. I just had the worse term of my life food wise (and life wise, but that's not for forums). This year I usually had takeaways, my favourite being dominoes and being at £15 a pizza it started getting stupid!

At one point I lived on subways for 5 days a week for a month, along with a lot of alcohol. I don't know how but I LOST weight, i was so shocked! But it didn't come cheap :/

I agree with the general consensus that £25-30 will easily do you for food (and probably for some alcohol too).

Around £40 at the supermarket, plus maybe £15 eating out each week. I eat a lot of fresh fish, asparagus etc though, and try to have 6 meals a day-takes it out of the budget somewhat!

On food alone I can't get by on less than about £50. That's including healthy protein sources and at least 10 portions of fruit/veg a day.

If you aren't too fussed about eating healthily then £30 seems about right.

Tesco metro in Jesmond, Newcastle (where I did most my shopping at uni) was supposed to be one of the most expensive tesco's in the north. I'm not sure how much truth there is in that, would have thought the prices were pretty standard between them. Guess I just don't pay that much attention hehe.

it is one of the most expensive. Its appauling prices. Hop on the metro and get yourself off at Byker, theres a Kwiksave, Morisons and Iceland in close proximity.

When stuffs on offer buy buy buy, go supermarkets late at night - you'll find bread for 20-30p as its nearly past its best before(whack it in freezer and just toast it for your brekky!)

I'm like him - I recon I spend between £50 and £80 on food a week - but I buy healthy ready made snacks at work a lot, which isn't cheap and buy a lot of decent meat, fruit & veg for eating at home.

I think on this last page we're bumping up the average a bit. I spend about £20 every 3 days, so I'd say £45-50 a week. I buy a lot of meat and poultry, nice veg and good bread, coupling this with a sandwich or two a week from M&S to add up the cost, no alcohol in that cost though usually.

Quite a lot if I end up going out for pub lunches and stuff with friends - usually anywhere between £20 and £40 a week. Somehow I drink about 4 pints of milk a day which adds up :P
