Scrub clearance work on the Downs area of Bristol has been delayed because of complaints from gay men who use the area for sex, the city council said.

The authority is concerned it could be accused of discrimination after a warning from its own lesbian, gay and bisexual advisory group.

It has suspended work on the Circular Road above Avon Gorge, which would open up the area to wildlife and visitors.

Talks are now being held to try to end the deadlock.

Interesting development, I had been under the impression that sex in public was indecent exposure and woe on you if you were caught. Apparently it's ok if nobody complains...

I'm always worried I will get raped whilst on a jog there in the dark... thats no lie...

ridiculous.

Stop crying "chase me, chase me" and giggling coquettishly then. :p

I actually misread the title completely as "'Gay talks' dreadlocks scrub work" and figured that you were just throwing random words together.

It isn't discrimination to cut down the bushes provided it would be done equally anywhere, having sex in public is not a right (in fact it can be a crime) and therefore the bushes should not be saved specifically on that basis.

I often go climbing on the cliffs around there and have to walk through the woods to get to the bottom (of the cliffs!) again. There are huge piles of condoms/wrappers everywhere it is totally disgusting! They should patrol the area more often (police) and maybe publish photos of whoever is caught breaking the law there to shame them into stopping.

IMO if it's just a random couple getting a bit carried away and having sex in the woods then it's not something to get upset about, but in that section of woods it happens so frequently + random men are just standing around waiting for someone else to come along, it's disturbing. Why can't the police go in and clear everyone out every now and again? I know it's not going to stop over night but it should at least reduce the numbers/make them consider doing it in their own homes.

Actually I've just given myself an idea. It's completely legal to take photographs of people in a public place and publish them on the internet, maybe it would be worth doing just that to shame them into stopping. It would be pretty easy to do as i've a small camera mounted to my helmet so it would be easy to photograph the people standing around! Although I think I'd rather not waste time that would be better spent climbing.... + they'd probably track me down and god knows what would happen!

Ahh, the downs. It's damn annoying, when I take the missus up there to indulge in a bit of dogging the place is full of queers

Send 'em all back.
