4850 What A Stonking Card!!

From all I'm reading it's the VRM's that need attention more than the GPU on the HD4850's, reckon some half decent heatisinks combined with a bit of gentle airflow should do the trick..

Well I'm currently pencil modding my card. With 1283mV the VRMs arent going above 60C. With the stock system ATI had, the VRMs would hit 90C+. So i'm pretty sure theres a lot of headroom. All im doing is pointing an 80mm fan at the VRMs, didnt even put any ram sinks on.

Im hoping to get 24/7 clock of 850mhz with ~1.3v with the VRMs staying under 70C. The GPU core itself doesnt get anywhere near that hot with an S1.

So cable tie the 120mm fan nearer the vrm end =job done ? should be safe without heatsinks ?

Well you may as well use ramsinks if you have them since it wont limit the voltages you can use (ive now stopped at 1329mV because I dont want the VRMs going above 70C). Ive put 2 fans on my S1, a 120mm fan and an 80mm fan directly over the VRMs. It does make it a bit heavy, so Ive had to use some string to take the weight off the card.

Also, wondering, whats the lowest 2d voltage that can be set via bios without the card becoming unstable? Or is there a lower limit anyway? I currently have it on 0.950v which leads to a real voltage of 1046mV after pencil mod.

Untill you consider the fact you can still grab two 4850's for crossfire for less then the nvidia offerings.

Then it ends up being
1. GTX280 (Just..)
2) 4850 Crossfire
3) 9800GX2
4) 4870
5) GTX260

Thats the way im seeing it too. The 4850 really is a stonking card for the price.

Hi i just bought the powercolor version of the card ...they all looked the same so i went for the cheapest version.
i was just wondering do i need any extra connections to connect this into my pc...currently i have a 8800gts 640.

do both 8800gts & 4850 use the same one 6 pin power connector ?
