I finally got round to fitting the stereo to my Jeep over the weekend and it suddenly occured to me that I've completely forgotten to tax it :(

I've got the paperwork but been so busy at work and re-decorating the house I just completely forgot.

If I apply for the disc online, am I going to get fined?

My mate didnt tax his bike for about a week or two and had no problems when he did tax it.

I doubt very much you'd get a fine - after all how would they know you've been driving it untaxed unless you actually got caught. It could have just as easily been sat in your garage (if you have one). Even if you did get a fine (they may argue you should have SORN'd it) you'd probably be looking at £60 but that can be reduced to about £45 if you offer a good reason for not having it taxed.

It's 'unoficially' around two weeks before the system automatically fines you, sometimes more. I suppose it just depends on backlogs.

tax it at a post office not online.

One offence is failure to display, so all though you have tax you can't drive or park it on public roads. Until the tax comes through the post.

Much better just to go to a post office and get it there and then.

Thats what i have always done anyway, what is the actual point of doing it online?

if you do it before your old one runs out, then it's very convenient don't have to leave your house. Only any good if you do it 2 weeks before your current one runs out though.

Errr are you seriously asking that?

It arrives through the post to your do, hence no hassle of going to a post office. It takes 34 seconds and you dont need to queue with undesireable people in a post office

It probably takes around 5mins extra to do it in town, i guess its much of a muchness, but ive always seen the online system as pointless.

Well I've just explained quite clearly how it isn't pointless. How is pointless? It allows you to spend 34 seconds ordering txa then you can forget about it.

There was already a perfectly quick and easy way to buy tax from hundreds of outlets all over the country. The online system saves very little time, and for me the tax would be sent to the wrong address as i assume it goes to the address on the V5?

For many i cant imagine it serves any purpose at all, going to a post office takes a matter of minutes, its done there and then on the spot

Always have and always will do mine at the PO, few mins and i walk out with it in my hand as opposed to the great RM lottery of will it arrive!

I can't beleive you are even arguing about this. There was a perfectly quick and easy way to read news before the BBC News website as well, does that make BBC News Pointless?

It's the same as ordering anything online - it's more convenient.

You do realise it is a criminal offence to have an address other your own on the V5 document when you keep your car at your own address, right?

I tax my wife's car online each time. Saves finding a parking space, walking to the P/O which is now inside a WHSmith, faffing around with paper forms, digging out insurance & MOT etc etc... All I do is fill in the form online and forget about the tax untill it arrives in the post, then pop it in the windscreen.

:)
